Great topic, I've been thinking about this subject too recently.
I'm dead 100% sure one of the main reasons AoM was so loved was thanks to the amazing god drawings that have a very classic yet very appealing designs. They represent the core of the game and whoever the artist was did a phenomenal job. Minor gods sometimes having an entirely different art style was a nice touch too.

yeah the international ones are fantastic as well so I'd probably pick Ocarina of Time and (maybe out of nostalgia) and Twilight Princess out of them, but I'd go for the jp Majora's Mask and both Windwaker's (think the original windwaker had a lit holo which unfortunately is pretty rare nowadays)

These are three of my favorite games of all time. The box art was quite dissonant with the games' art but somehow I was fortunate enough to see past that. PS4 and SF 1's are at least passable-was PS4 done by Vallejo!? Shining Force 2 otoh has terrible box art. They made the main character Bowie into a fat, deconditioned brap hog with a double chin in an upskirt pose, wtf. Literally one of the worst covers ever for what was a phenomenal game.

Then you have shit games like "Time Lord" that have extremely rad and distinctly western art but the game itself is worthless.

Disregarding art style, left just has a poor and unfocused composition that was clearly slapped together haphazardly. Not to mention there are some technical issues as well, with how big the top left magician's hands are, the shoulder/arm on the middle left man, and the huge skeleton heads on bottom right.
The only thing it has over the Japanese version maybe is color scheme, the intense blues and reds are a bit more eye-catching than the yellow, brown, and orange of the Japanese cover.

I was just thinking about this today, in that pic I think I set the h/s slider to -100, but as a value checker I went from a black layer set on color blend mode to a -100 h/s correction layer. I tried switching back today to the fill layer and I noticed there's a huge difference
Having a black fill layer set on color blend gives you same values as converting the layer to greyscale

I have no idea which one is more color accurate, maybe someone more knowledgeable about digital color can chime in, I would love an answer to this 'cause it's a pretty big deal

and someone said that in Photoshop, the "proof - working grey" function is the most contrast accurate. If someone with Photoshop can run the original pic through that filter I can compare it with the CSP functions maybe. Pretty please, Photoshop master race?

the other rows are the contrast ratios you get with every filter, the "proof - working grey" row has the accurate contrast ratio of 1.1 and 1.8, which is the same as the actual contrast ratio in the original colors.

I eventually tested all overlays in CSP (black fill color blend, black fill saturation blend, various greys, hue/saturation) and black fill layer set on saturation or color (no difference, greys also don't matter) is more accurate than a hue/saturation correction layer. There's still an error margin, but it's OK if you just want a toggleable layer to check your values.

In the end there is no "best" greyscale approach, no professional photographer will tell you there's a best method to convert a photo into greyscale and just like everything else it's all about tweaking things until the image looks best.
But as far as checking the values of a picture you're working on, that is the most contrast-accurate method.

Then just explain how to get an accurate conversion in CSP. Not to antagonize, I really want to know.
And I only see 2 methods to do this on a layer (so you can toggle it), either a fill layer or a gradient map and blending modes or a hue/saturation correction layer. I see nothing else.

No, wrong. Don't mess with dot gain settings at all.

Dot gain is the effect of paper absorbing ink and pulling it larger than it should be, which makes the printout look darker. This setting in Photoshop is to compensate for dot gain by making the image lighter than it is.

This is not a discussion I care to partake because it's very technical on something that depends a lot on subjective perception and interpretation. But I will tell you that if you're looking to understand this as part of a b/w to color workflow, stick to using greyscale command/black hue layer mode. We've had this discussion so many times I even have this image prepared already. There's a reason greyscale mode works the way it does, rather than desaturate.

Yes. Look more carefully at what the desaturation command does on the top right. Not only do shadow areas seem blotchy, the jaw line is completely lost. There are people who will engage in very pedantic arguments over how these are the "right" values, but this is simply not how we perceive the original painting.

The bottom images are showing what happens when we try to bring them back into color by painting on an overlay layer. The desaturation side is permanently fucked, it's nearly impossible to get it back.

meanwhile your example here >>4078614 even as thumbnail, shows a lack of the darker values on the left "accurate" side. And that painting is kinda well known for having dark connected shapes and less detail in between. Thus both left and right don't seem very accurate.

Also just because something has been already theorized or discussed so many times doesn't mean that a factually definite conclusion has been reached, or that further insight and improvement should be dismissed. If you're okay being stuck with a mediocre theory as your go-to principle, then that's just your thing.

He's right, it's really less accurate.

Sure high contrast images are nice to look at, but if you want an accurate value study, the desaturate filter is literally the worst option to pick.
