>>3969263These exaggerated expressions like >3970010 or that faux Disney/anime mix like OP give me a feeling like uncanny valley, they look insincere and they always look the same across artists. I feel they are just thinking "squash and stretch!" or "this is cute/appealing so it's good!" without really thinking about communicating something so the expressions look about as authentic as emoticons. It's ok if you're doing Bugs Bunny but if you want your characters to actually emote you can't crank it to 11 all the time.
Manga/anime too tends to range between a bunch of default serious faces and ultra hammy, only a few people like Miyazaki actually care about subtlety. Even the Yoshinari stuff posted here is amazing and I love him but it's mostly serious anime faces that don't really say anything. Anime most of the time is so minimalistic that they strip down expressive elements like the lips, and they just put a shitton of detail in the eyes, so every expression becomes an eye expression and mouth expressions are emoji tier.
I'm incredibly picky though.
