What does /ic/ think of the Watt's Atelier online course?
The whole thing is available on CGP, ~250GB of instruction.

I started going through it a few days ago, starting from "Fundamentals I". Anyone else?

I did this a few years ago, he basically taught me nothing I hadn't read online for free already and your assignments were to draw reference photos in charcoal. Absolutely not worth the money, go do a life drawing session once a week instead, infinitely better and costs like $5 a session.

Honesty, it's garbage. Not worth the disk space even if you get it for free.
The whole "atelier" style of drawing is trash. It relies too much on copying and in the end just creates shitty imprecise human printers.
It had it place long time ago, back when the concept was created, but in the age of photography it's just a waste of time.

So how do I get good? I can't rely on loomis since I'm beg tier when it comes to most aspects of drawing however "Drawing with the right side of your brain", was too basic and I learned nothing from it

Trash too. Belongs to the same garbage bin as "Keys to drawing".
Check out Huston's book and videos. Watch Vilppu's lectures.
"Alla Prima" by Schmid is also good.
If you have discipline and more than 100iq, you can also check out handprint's pages on perspective and color.

You have no idea what youre talking about. Watts has a huge focus on construction and a painterly style of rendering. The human printer type artists dont even go to ateliers because you dont need that to learn how to trace and use a grid.

Also, more than half of the instructors at Watts are fantasy artists. Retard.

This ignorant shit again. Look at EM Gist, Lucas Graciano, and Michael C Hayes, all trained at the Watts and teach at the atelier now. Theyre all professional level fantasy illustrators. Stop being willfully ignorant.

It's actually you who is ignorant here.
Ateliers traditionally were always mainly copy, totally different from mainly construction way of drawing that animators usually use.
Construction there is attached by ducttape.

I'm not arguing that they don't know the "theory", i'm saying that they don't use it.

Drawing is, in my opinion, is being able to put on paper things from your imagination. If you always have to use reference, there is no point.
But this is what "atelier style" is.

If you want to learn construction there are better sources.

You keep arguing "Atelier style" but from what I've seen most of the course is construction and pencil/brush dexterity.

If you would, I'd like you to expand on why you dislike the course's teaching.

If you can afford to go to the actual school you will get good fast. The online portion is a supplement and not an alternative or replacement no matter how much they advertise it is. I wasted $200 on their live portion only to find out it's a continuation of their previous live classes the last semester. If you didn't watch those then no refund for you.

Their forums are dead and it takes ages for you to get critique. And without the house instructors slapping your wrist when you make a mistake it's basically fumbling in the dark if you go without paying and using the torrent. And it's really annoying sharpening the pencils that keep breaking.

However their lesson plan is solid. That's where it stops.

kek. I guess people have different goals here, but I'd say a lot of people want to work in the industry either as illustrators or concept artists. vast majority of those kinds of artists use reference, especially the latter

do fundamentals 1 and 2, head 1, figure 1. download all the master class pdfs and then look at those to see what you want to learn. having all of it at once is pointless. it's pointless to watch and not do the work either, most of it is oil painting which you'll never touch. you need feedback or some type of mentorship, locking yourself away with 250 gb is a beginner trap like people downloading language books thinking that's all it takes to learn languages. you need practice and exposure to the rest of the world, watts online isn't going to make you an artist. reading art books however will teach you more than most watts demos.

his work really doesn't appeal to me. most of it just reminds me of disney pirates of the caribbean or the charcoal drawings are overly lump and lacking contrast or interesting shape design/line economy like frazetta.

especially true for hardsurface stuff and movie industry. look at any artbook in the last 10 years. the top concept artists are mostly doing 3D and combining it with photobash.

You probably watched a handful of videos and drew the conclusion that Watts Atelier wasn't spoonfeeding you a magical way to draw construct your 3D husbando out of your ass and decided it was shit.

Concept art is all about whether it generates the idea or feel that the studio is looking for in a separate product. The concept art itself is just a means to an end. If you have to make a photorealistic scene to convey the idea that your boss could possibly reject or tell you to change to get what they want then there's no reason not to photobash textures for example instead of spending extra hours rendering.

Sounds like you want to be an illustrator not a concept artist. Watts' curriculum is probably the best for illustrators from what I've seen.
