Ancient Laptop+Cintiq pro13 vs new laptop+ Intuos Pro Medium

Hi guys ! I am going to attend a 2-years Concept art & Illustration course. The problem i have is: I want to keep my ancient laptop (i5 5200U, 8Gb Ram, 930M, only supports USB 3.0, HDMI, no USB-C/3.1/ThuderBolt and no mini display port, only HD screen. The hardware is enough since the course focuses mostly on 2D, just a bit 3D. Just need a draw tablet and a better screen, so I am thinking of Cintiq Pro 13. Since my laptop doesn't have USB-C or mini display port, i will need to buy a HDMI to mini display port converter and i will be a hell bunch of cable. Another option i have is to buy a new laptop (maybe a Macbook air or a laptop with decent display which is around 1k$) with a Intuos pro Medium (PTH-660), around 350$. The thing makes me confused about this option is that i may apply for an more extreme concept art course after this(after 2-3 years from now, which will cost like a shithole of money) and they may require a much better laptop ( currently Mac pro i7). So i really don't know what to do right now... Any advices ? Thanks in advance, guys !

Firstly, always buy for your current use-case and not what you'll need in 3 years. If you just wait and buy something new in 3 years, you'll get a much better machine for the same price -- and that's assuming you don't make any extra money in time between.

Secondly, understand that Cintiq and Intuos are different devices. If you can go somewhere to try them, or try a friend's, I'd recommend it. Both have pros and cons. Just remember that Intuos has more of a learning curve to get used to, but is perfectly capable of doing everything a cintiq can.

Also I wouldn't consider a macbook air much of an upgrade from what you have now.

Save for a cintiq 16 non pro, trust me.

Also plenty of industry professionals use intuos just fine, u can get by with a cheap xp pen deco 02 ( used it, amazing prefer it over intuos) and spend more on a laptop + color accurate monitor.

Pretty sure ur mac pro i7 is fine. Concept/illustration work isnt demanding on hardware but storage setups is a worthy investment. ( cloud, cloud, and learn what a NAS is)

Yeah i only look at Mac Air because of its ''affordable'' price and its screen in case i don't go for a drawing tablet with screen. I also have tried both and yes, the cintiq pro does feel more natural while drawing.

May u share experience with Pro 13? The only thing holding me back from going for it is the number of cables i will have to carry while drawing, since my laptop doesn't support both mini DP and USB-C. Also my laptop isn't Mac pro 17 but the one with hardware i mentioned above T_T Mac Pro 17 is curently the required laptop the course, which i want to apply for in future, askes for.

It does really feel like wasting money if i buy a laptop now and then gotta buy a new one in 2-3 years for another course though T_T Considering the enormous money i will have to spend to apply for the course and living aboard

Do you guys really do course work on your laptop? Back in my day we get a strong desktop/ mac pro (at least xeon/i7) to do work on, the laptop is only for displaying work progress etc. Which is what I'd suggest, since working on a small screen is very irksome.

You start directly on the laptop? Wow. Times have changed. Anyways, if your MacBook Pro is 15 inch with a good gpu and the screen color hasn’t gone too long without calibration it should be fine to work with the cintiq, albeit a little underpowered. Not sure they teach this in school or your school particularly but if the mbp is used for texture rendering etc to do photobashing it’s gonna get hot or slow.
