How do you study composition? Do you copy comic frames, movie stills, illustrations, masters? What books did you read for the theory behind it?

I read Framed Ink and filled up 3 waterbrushes with different value washes of ink and made a crapton of thumbnails using 3 values, foreground (dark), middle ground (mid) and background (light). Thousands of them. You can do the same thing with grey copics.
Also I studied Frazetta because fuck yeah Frazetta.

I made a template with a grid of frames like the picture in the OP, I'd print a bunch of those out and just draw in them. It's just abstract thumbnails so it takes like a couple minutes to do a frame. It's really not as daunting as it seems.

Yes, different keys of lighting like high key, low key, etc.

Value study, Jack Hamm's Landscape book is amazing for composition, Dow - Composition, Hans Bacher Dream Worlds. Ryan Lang Color and Light has some good concepts too.

you can study books that the other anons mentioned, but it will only give you a very rigid understanding of composition. it really comes down to taste and artistic intuition. you either have it or you don't.

composition isn't like figure drawing or knowing how to render. you cannot grind away at it because it's the most abstract subject in creating art. it is also the most important factor in what makes art appealing. the books can only teach you the 'principals' but copying them verbatim doesn't automatically make good art. you need an natural artistic sense in applying them.

OP here. Just downloaded Composition - Dow, Composition - Poore and the Eye of the Painter by Loomis. Also I'll be copying movie stills and good art focusing on composition of elements and value.

I feel like Jack Hamm's books are really underrated on /ic/. He manages to pack so much useful information into a limited number of pages. And his books always gets straight to the point. If any anons want to buy them, they can be brought for usually around just $5 each used.
