Why are westerners so bad at drawing anime? It seems like anyone can recreate western art but when it's the other way, it's just awful. Is it because all the best resources are in Japanese and only weebs learn japanese? It doesn't seem that hard because only the eyes are exaggerated and there's usually less details, yet everyone sucks at it.

But really. Anime is literally just about finding a cute way of drawing facial features and slapping it on various consistently proportioned people looking things.

It's why you can just throw a random animu face on literally anything and it still kinda works. Because 99% of anime is literally just the face. Westerners haven't realized this yet and overthink things, trying to actually make real drawings and not just slapping random shit on the paper with a cute face.

I would assume it's a cultural thing. Japanese artists grow up watching anime and are constantly surrounded by it, and Westerners grow up watching cartoons. I'm thankful to my weeb sisters who only exposed me to anime and Japanese content when I was growing up, so I find it a lot easier to get an authentic look. The downside however, is that I grew up with completely different interests to my peers, could never make friends as a result and now I am completely socially retarded. The fact that anime is becoming "mainstream" kind of annoys me because all those people who rejected anime and manga from my childhood (calling it gay, creepy, weird, etc) now think it's cool and act like they've been into it for years.

I use western sources for learning (Hampton, Bammes) because I'm not fluent in japanese and can actually understand it, but I study from japanese artists (artbooks, genga, manga etc) as much as I can when I'm not doing any formal learning.

I think you anime fags are so fucking misguided. I like anime as much as the next guy, Bakemonogatari is like one of the best looking shows ever, but so much of the shit you idolize is so misguided and not very good. Maybe when you grow older you'll recognize art that isn't "Anime".

Of course a syndicated weekly cartoon for CHILDREN is going to have less production quality than a multi-million dollar anime that only needs to have 24 episodes and even then, at least the "quality" of a western cartoon remains semi-consistent and doesn't have parts where they CLEARLY blew their entire budget and other parts that are total filler/shit looking.

Because they write how they draw. So when they write they're also drawing, and therefore, get extra practice.
Just look how they write their kanjis and shit and then compare to how they put down their lines on their drawings, and you'll notice the similarity.

I don't think anime is necessarily good. The only point to it is that it's heavily simplified and cute. I think it's better at doing that than a lot of other media types, but quality has nothing to do with it. Anime can be (and usually is) low quality.

The actual answer is: there is no manga industry for westerners. Most people in the West who draw seriously end up abandoning manga or not even considering it at all, because most Western art aims at either realism or cartooning. That leaves a bunch of amateur manga artists who perpetuate the myth that westerners can't draw manga.
Check thomasintokyo, he's French and his stuff looks 100% Japanese because he actually works in the industry

Anime comes under 'Western art', in fact all drawn art does as there's no living traditions aside from it (other Western traditions are dead too), and there's nothing particular about it because it differs between each artist unlike anime which is literally an arrangement of stock parts with some added details. Also, have you seen Japanese artists online? It's largely abhorrent. Anime itself is pretty bad, too.

Writing kanji properly is much more precise and detailed than roman characters. Just consider the fact that it takes roughly a year to have students learn to write in our alphabet, but it takes japanese kids 10+ years to learn all kanjis.
Which means that they spend 10 times more time to study and write charcters. You can consider it ineficient, but it means they are used to work more too.

This is pretty misinformed. The reason it takes kids 10 years to learn all the 3000-ish common kanji is partly because a 10-year-old school kid has little to no reason to use "advanced" academic or adult words in their day-to-day vocabulary and therefore don't need to be taught those characters until later, and partly because the way kanji is taught in schools is based on rote memorization and horribly inefficient. An adult learner could easily learn and become able to recall and write kanji by putting in one or two hours worth of effort per day over 3 months using much more efficient systems.

Hastily handwritten kana and kanji is hardly more precise or requires finer motor skills than using latin letters and this whole meme about kanji/hanzi being the reason Asian artists are good is some bro-science tier bullshit.

It's not about how precise they must be, but how they are written. They use strokes when they're writing, while latin letters can be written without having to lift the pencil from the paper. See how a Japanese writes and then see a Japanese drawing, you'll notice the similarity.

I'd seriously doubt your friend's judgement if they had to work for years to figure out stroke order and relative positioning of strokes, which is a concept that really should click within a few afternoons of practice unless you have dyslexia or some severe learning disorders. Unless you're doing some large-scale calligraphy with ink and brush, stroke weight or placement is completely irrelevant for day-to-day tasks that involve handwriting.
The only reason that this myth that people who don't grew up writing CJK will never be able to draw using certain flavours of heavy stylization continues being brought up is because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy for people like you who keep perpetuating it.

And again, this is not different from any other school system in any other (developed) country in the world. I've already explained that kanji do not have some intrinsic magic property about them that makes people who write using them any better at drawing than people using latin letters, arabic script or any other writing system. Japanese schoolkids likely spend about as much time of their life handwriting as western schoolkids so you can't extrapolate that "they write more therefore they are better at drawing" either.

using perspective can give sometimes a western subtle feel.

I'm happy with my skill because it looks like a real japanese manga art.

If you believe that anime equals throwing perspective and anatomy out of the window like you suggest you have severely misunderstood what it is that makes anime-like artwork appealing. You can't draw good anime without considering anatomy or perspective, the trick is to choose what to stylize and simplify to achieve that certain cutesy effect, which in 95% of all cases is done by directing the stylization solely on hair and facial features.

A lot of what makes a doujin manga looks doujin comes from shoddy amateur work.

using techniques like perspective or advanced anatomy, while important (I literally never said they weren't important), makes you work not belonging on the same category as average anime/doujin/VN/eroge.

Yes, there's japanese artists who use perpective and master anatomy, like the guy that makes Vagabond, but their work looks western, like it doesn't belong with the rest of the anime industry.

It would be like learning opera and clasical singing techniques to do rap.

handwriting kanji has nothing to do with being better at art. only calligraphy in cjk or latin letters would actually translate to some artistic skill with pressure or brush control for lines but not to the actual art. stop repeating dunb shit.

In general they seem to view humans differently. Not sure what it is but it seems to come easier to them and I can only assume it's perception. Westerners who immerse themselves in the culture can do it, but in general the Japanese seem to be better at it and even other asians seem to have an easier time emulating it closer. b) It's really hard to wash deeply rooted influence and many westerners can't wash off the cartoons and think in anime from years of work.
c) a lot of "anime" inspired cartoons brought to the US are cheap trend jumpersand are done without understanding what actually goes into anime
d) the ones who work hard and are smart enough eventually get it. Thomas romain, Jetty, the original avatar creators got a lot right too. He's gonna hate me for saying this but I know a dude named Yev who draws more loose and anime looking work than actual seasonal anime. Also consider some of the asians who draw anime are not japanese. I think people like sae jin (korean) Genuinely draw anime better than 99.5% of actual japanese artists.
e)until relatively recently accessibility was relatively limited to anime, resources and even mediums used to make it.
f) in early internet days there were a lot of artists that got really good at the anime style from the west. If you go to some 2004-11 stuff on newgrounds you'll find some real gems that you could easily mistake for being made by japs
g) zone's westerner and they got a really good hold on switching between cartooney style and anime, so if you want to find the secret to how to do this they are probably the person to ask.

3) Nips understand and execute neoteny better. In the west, women have to look like 30 year olds with big, wide lips and makeup to look attractive. The Japanese value real beauty, which comes directly from youth. Even if a character is in her 30s, she probably looks younger than the western equivalent. Often, lips give away that the artist is western, as well as general neoteny.
4) line work. Nips have different line work, usually. Idk how to describe it. More confident, maybe? Could be be because of their writing system. It feels more like sketching.

There's definitely many unique facial feature shapes like nose/lips/eyes that exist only in anime that even Westerners often overlook in favor of more pronounced shapes, especially the nose/nostril area and lips as you said.

Nip drawn lips always seem more subtle, suggesting more rather than outright drawing them fully, same with the nose too

I think a lot of it comes down to anime styling is actually a fair bit of symbol drawing. Symbol drawing is some sort of horrible sin to a lot of Western learners but is it so bad when the end result is appealing? I can't find the gif but someone recreated anime faces in CG and the camera would pan around to show you how a face would only look good from specific angles because the drawings were highly stylized and innacurate representations of foreshortening.

I think we also just don't get exposed to the shitty Japanese artists because of the language barrier.

Lastly the art education in Japan seems to be a lot stronger than in the West where many of the trade/art schools shut down in the 60s due to photography replacing illustration. The schools that continued on were highly influenced by fine art movements of the time that underrated representational art. The graduates have since gone on to educate other students the same way and degrees are needed to teach in pre collegiate environments. So we have generations of poor pedagogy and few skilled mentors for young people in school environments.

I always come into these threads hoping to get an idea of what exactly is the difference anyway though. I see a lot of anime style stuff all the time that looks "authentic" to me that I couldn't guess almost anything about the artist behind it. I've been finding out a lot of the anime stuff I really like is drawn by like Koreans or other non Japanese people anyway. So I keep wanting to figure out what exactly it is that people seem to be able to see that makes it so obvious to them because most of the time I never notice anything that makes me wonder whether the art came from Japan or not, it just looks like anime.

I agree completely, and that's why it confuses me so much that other people seem to feel like there's this obvious difference between anime drawn by Japanese people vs everyone else. I definitely think exposure plays a huge role, but what I didn't really say clearly is that I think anyone who looks at it enough and copies it enough could learn to draw it in a way that to me seems totally indistinguishable, as with the handful of non Japanese artists I've seen whose anime looks as "authentic" to me as any others'. This whole thread is bait so I've forgone worrying about that by choosing to participate in it. But I will take an opportunity to debunk something easy like that just in case anyone else falls for believing it like I used to.

As for being observant though help me figure out what to observe. Most of the time I see people pointing out things with obvious drawing flaws as "clearly western". But among things that are very well drawn what are the substantial differences if any? I'd have never known Kr0n's wasn't Japanese if not for people raging about it here. Krenz isn't Japanese either. A handful of UDON artists like this guy, Omar Dogan have work that looks like "real" anime to me, but people act like there's some kind of meaningful difference and I don't see it.

some of dogan's work actually does look like it could be japanese but some of his other design choices are very western. i liked some of his ibuki illustrations back in the day. the problem with a lot of udon tends to be way overrendering the lips, nose, and looking way too early-00s style digital art/photoshop look (soft round everywhere on the face). when i was younger i thought robaato was a lot better than he was but then i started drawing and saw a lot of issues. udon street fighter artists tend to come a lot closer to fooling people but they share a lot of similar cues that look a bit dated by now. the facial proportions such as eye width are usually good tells along with very western style craniums. the hair typically isn't as voluminous as japanese art, it tends to lay too close to the head. if you looked at his deviantart you'd see that most of it is very western looking.

an easier thing to tell about asian not-jp artists is the similar rendering style or samefaces of some korean artists or chinese artists. like the pejorative "render monkey" of the same shitty concept art massive battle stuff getting in anime style images from the past few years.

Why is it *important* that you can tell the artist wasn't Japanese? Whether or not it's bad doesn't get to the heart of my curiosity about this. Something being bad is as easy as saying you don't like it. I really want to know why it matters so much if there's some subtle thing, or maybe even a not so subtle thing, in an otherwise great drawing from an otherwise great artist that lets you know they're inspired by JP art but not JP themselves. A lot of people here seem really hung up on this and I think if we ask why it's important maybe some people can move forward from it.

Despite what you're implying, there's so much more to art than just technical excellence, so I see nothing wrong with people trying to pursue a very particular style they're passionate about, whatever their reason maybe.

As for my reason, other than style preference, I also think that it's because it's a very interesting and elusive challenge to pursue. Most non-Japanese artists clearly failed to adopt the anime style, despite really trying their hardest to grasp it. So I see it as a very potentially rewarding challenge to clear, were I able to integrate the style successfully.

Research, experimentation, study, discussion and stuff like that, there's just so much interesting stuff to unpack about the style, making it a very enjoyable pursuit for me with rewards of satisfaction in even the littlest successes and hurdles I overcame.

Omar's come off as kind of bimbo-y a lot of the time, but when he does it right they look good. One picture of Evil Ryu in particular is what helped me want to get better with Copics. I wanted to commission him one time and have him draw Akuma, but the day I nearly messaged him, he posted a batch and sure enough, bimbo lipped Akuma. The rest of his stuff looks good for the most part, and I understand the "style" aspect like I mentioned with Huang, but damn I wish he'd go back to his older ways. I feel like his style peaked for the most part in the Street Fighter Unlimited run. Seems to have gone downhill since. His Spidersona was cool though.

How does it get more truly anime than that? And what if an artist can't see the greatness in their own work because they can't see past some vague hint that could betray their non JPness to viewers? I guess I just think that aiming to create quality work with an anime aesthetic is the healthy limit, when art that looks authentically anime in every way to me is still unsatisfactory. It's like it has no end, like someone could end up creating anime art tons of people think is straight from Japan yet hate their own work because they don't see it, or have someone making great work they hate because it just isn't anime enough and not appreciating their own artistic voice.

i never said it was bad but it can easily be perceived as occupying an uncanny valley which isn't appealing to either people with western or eastern inclinations. it's usually not just "a little something" looking western. i really don't like western stylization, i never have even since i was a child who wasn't exposed to anime by anyone in my family or by friends. there's a lot of subtlety that completely goes over people's heads so when you can tell the difference it seems like it's done by someone incompetent who's copying symbols without understanding what they're there for (which is usually the case and is part of what makes it a bad drawing). it's not that you have to try to draw like a japanese, you have to not fall into the traits of western cartoonization and linework that a lot of people find unappealing especially on this site. one little thing like a pouty, rudolph tumblr nose can absolutely destroy any image for me no matter how strong the rest of it is whether it's from east or west. that can be how it feels sometimes to see people draw anime style poorly.

Man, you're treating Kron and Dogon as if they are in the upper echelon of non-Japanese anime imitation. I don't think Kron is even trying to do "authentic" anime, as much as just being being semi-inspired by it.
While I did say that it's an elusive goal, it's not an impossible one.
See Tim Lochner's latest works for a good example of a successful anime imitation. He's actually a very interesting case, because his older works very much feels like the typical Western-influenced anime style, yet he managed to break out of that shell.

That's all on the artist's mindset. If a person is the type to be overly negative and critical of themselves, it doesn't matter if they pursue Japanese, Western or French style, they'll still have the same tendency to hate their own work.

No, I'm not trying to discourage people from trying to capture it, after all anime is why I started drawing so I'd be a huge hypocrite. What I'm questioning is why people feel like they haven't gotten the style down at the point where most people would say they have. It's not that I can't see some subtle differences between the two, it's that to me those differences are what make that style a particular artist's anime style, whereas people hung up on this would say that actually makes the style not anime, and I think that's unhealthy.

The way I'm seeing people talk about capturing the style makes it seem impossible to me. It's like saying you've only captured Ruan Jia's style if you make a painting that 100% of viewers mistake for his. But in reality there's more than one way to capture his style, and you can do it in a way where people know he didn't paint it yet they see you're following that style. How many famous Impressionists are there? How many Dadaists? Dozens of artists in these categories, and to be authentic all they had to do was hit the notes of the trend, not be clones. Drawing in a restricted style does not inherently restrict your happiness or healthiness(?) in any way, if you're passionate about the style in the first place.

Eventually they will speak like a native speaker though. This is actually a false and very misleading analogy, and shows just how shallow you're understand of this style is. We're not trying to fully replicate the look of a single artist, we're trying to replicate a style. The authentic anime style have a surprisingly big range, if you ever looked into it properly.

I'm not trying to be dramatic, I think people who think anime enough isn't anime enough are being over-dramatic, and discussing why I think so. And again, anime is the reason I started drawing, and I was at one point that kid who wanted to move to Japan and have my own manga. But I fell for the anime isn't marketable in America meme and started learning western art. Then I saw anime inspired art doing well so for a while I regretted switching, but through overall improvement I'm now able to draw what looks like real anime to me as well as western comic style and it's a huge relief. So it's not that I think trying to learn anime is inherently bad, but I think silencing your own voice is.

I know anime is greatly varied, that's exactly why I'm bringing this up. No it doesn't, because people enjoy the quest for native-level anime art skills. Like that other anon said, you are projecting (in the non-meme sense) your own set of beliefs and convictions (and possibly insecurities) onto others by claiming that they are "unhealthy" and should be content with what they have, instead of simply accepting that they have a different (I'd say more refined, but that's subjective) view of what Japanese-style art is than you and want to get as close to it as possible.

I don't even know how we're still arguing about this when it should have been clear from the start.

And I can relate, though my agony was over being able to draw western comic style. Ironically I was scared I'd never be hired because my art looked too much like anime. It's based on what I see here daily, and my own experiences, not stuff I'm making up.
Like I said, the core conflict is we have different understandings of meeting the goal (that's why I used the qualifier "for intents and purposes"). I'm not discouraging people from aiming for an authentic look, only cautioning not to get so hyper focused on it they do miss the value in their work.

Because it is a real thing that happens, there's artists through history who've burned their work because it wasn't "perfect". I just wanted to put that perspective out there for anyone who one day finds themselves as knotted up over it as I used to be, to help them realize it when they have met their goal or have possibly hit a new one they never knew they wanted but can be incredibly fulfilling, like I did. Just something to stay in the back of their minds so that in moments of deep frustration they might remember it and take a step back, look at what they have and think: Maybe a thing they're trying to change in their work isn't bad, and doesn't make it look inauthentic. I'm gonna be honest here, i'm personally more into western takes on the anime artstyle when it looks good to stand on its own. i guess the reason for it is that the eyes don't looks as creepy as some anime art tends to do. not all anime or manga artist do this but it is apparent.

that and the characters actually feel more mature than the flat chested loli bullshit i see some japanese artist pull sometimes. again just preference personally but i do miss these more semi realistic anime styles that use to be so common in the 90s and 80s. now it's all moe blob sullshit with the occasionally semi realistic look.

the dogan tracer mouth reminds me a lot of some alvin lee stuff, like the 4 marks of the lip ends and top/bottom with some blush for the lips. lee doesn't make it look as bimboey though usually and is probably one of the better ones to come from there. i guess them all working together decided to focus on lips as something to really make their own work stand out but lmao is it ugly.

I only bring up the "particular look" as part of my point that noone would care about authenticity once you have the look down. People keep saying you can "tell the difference" but most Japanese otaku treat franchises like Girls Frontline and Azur Lane the same way as Japanese ones even though they're made and drawn by Chinese/Koreans (provided they're not hardcore nationalists).

Non-Japanese Asians don't have some magical genetic advantage. It's all cultural based on exposure to anime/manga and grinding. They're also more willing to conform to trends (which helps with capturing "the look") compared to ugly tumblr muh style wanting to be unique snowflakes.

An asian growing up in the west will still likely have high exposure to asian culture including anime. The ones who immigrate usually have good money and a plan to keep making money, so they'll often take trips back to the country they came from. Asians also tend to form pretty strong communities, setting up whole neighborhoods with shops, services, and residences all featuring cultural cuisine, goods, and languages. They don't just move and totally ditch their heritage, they're often very adamant about passing it on to their kids.
Also, not every western asian draws flawless authentic looking anime. Not trying to shitpost but Sakimichan is a good example.

I know you've heard of Chinatown in San Fransisco. You've probably heard of Little Tokyo in LA. Even where I am I can drive 10 minutes north to what's basically an entirely asia-themed city. There's a Japanese mall there, with a department store full of Japanese goods as in clothes, household products and furniture, groceries, there's an entire Barnes n Noble sized Japanese book store filled with Japanese books, manga, and other media, the entire neighborhood is nothing but various asian stores and it stretches miles, it's not just a few city blocks. I don't agree with the premise that only asian people can ever draw good anime but I know that being linked to the culture anime comes from means growing up they'll still likely have high exposure to it, many asian americans even speak to that fact. Anyway I know you're just trolling for replies so this is the last you'll get from me.

A Filipino kid born in the US might grow up eating lumpia regularly but a white kid might grow up never knowing that exists let alone having it. The area in my city I referred to has goods, services, and food from all those countries and then some but I used asian to refer to them collectively because of the word limit.

Also something I wondered about. Why is it that a majority of asian artists seem to draw better from a young age? My guess is because they study the basics and have a better work ethic than Americans do (See the copying animu shit without studying) but I could be wrong.

they don't. it's thousands of hours of practice. they're more motivated, in asian countries you typically work towards being the best you can at one thing instead of meandering in a bunch of things you're not good at.

Not at all and this is false, too many people believe this. Japs have a lot of shitty as well as useful resources and the West has good ones too. Also, Japs need to learn anatomy to draw anime first which is universal and not restricted to Japanese resources.

Also, you (or whoever believes your shitty bait) are ignoring the thousands of beginner Japanese anime artists that completely fucking suck at it. Some are elementary student-tier, and some are more advanced than that but are still shit at rendering/anatomy/painting/perspective. Being born and raised in Japan might give you an advantage because you're taught the Japanese writing system early on and that's what you keep using (and learning) all your life (also because Japs seem to have a more healthy view towards art), but that won't guarantee that you'll be a good anime artist. The amount of shit art I've seen on Pixiv (by Japanese people) is staggering.
