What happened to Corel Painter?

A lot of people used to use Painter as their software of choice around 2006-2011. Photoshop was still super dominant, but there seemed to at least be a tiny bit of competition from Corel.

But I haven't come across a Painter user in a long time. Did they all eventually just switch to PS? It Painter still quality? Even here people recommend Painstorm and ArtRage for realistic painting software.

i sometime find a Chinese streamer using the program. It's very popular with Chinese. I've seen Japanese use the program in random video game infomercials. It's mostly used by the veteran 40 somethings with Sinix being the guy who just wants to be different.

It could be a great program, but it has issues that Corel refuses to fix while adding on things people didn't ask for. And they keep releasing a new version for $500 ever year with minor gimmicks.

People only use what OTHER people use just to feel that they "are doing things the right way".
I don't use photoshop for a few reasons.

1. It's too fucking expensive to pay the amount of money just to draw digitally. What are people going to do when they decide that they don't want to spend the time to get good at drawing on a computer AFTER paying for fucking Photoshop?.

2.Photopshop is for editing photographs, not for doing digital drawings with.

3. Of course you can use krita and GIMP to draw with, but are they really going to be concerned with answering any questions or fixing any bugs in their programs since people are not paying for it? I think the answer is a big fat NO.

4.The reason to use a program that you paid for to draw with, is that once you pay for it you get the latest version for free, well, you do if you use ArtRage which is what I use, but this should apply to ANY program that you go to pay for, should it not?
And it also gives the company an incentive to make sure that the customer gets their problems resolved, so what is going to make a company that gives out their software for free the incentive to make sure that any issues get fixed?

For one CSP is just owning painter in terms of pricing model. One time purchase free updates that are adding significant features instead of mostly gimmicks at the full price of the program. Photoshop gets away with it because it's industry standard I guess.

I only see old users still using Painter like Yoshinari Yoh. With how much of a cluster fuck the UI is and finding brushes I'd be very surprised to see newcomers using Painter. Despite that the brush engine feels really natural and the pick up underlying layers feature is amazing. Which is a shame because the original dudes who made the program were well ahead of their time.

Corel handles its softwares and online services like absolute shit. I wanted Painter so badly to do digital oil paints, but corel's bs makes it not worth the effort
does artrage have brushes like pic related?

1. Not sure I understand. A subscription for Photoshop is only $10/mo. A decent sketchbook and pencils costs more than that, so I'm not sure PS a large investment if you're just trying out digital art.

2. It's for image editing. It always has been. They only called it Photoshop because "ImagePro" was taken.

And furthermore, this in itself is a bad reason. Even if it was developed specifically for image editing, you're not going to use it despite it being the most powerful for digital art?

I can understand if it's because you dislike the brush engine or you use features that PS doesn't have, but you didn't say that. It's just "PS is made for photo editing, so therefore I won't use it for digital art."

I don't understand what you're last two have to do with Photoshop...

It is too quality. It's expensive, has a 90 degree learning curve and is a ridiculous resource hog so you need a higher end computer to run it well.
The second CSP implements a non-retarded way to texturize brushes without burning your gpu, Painter is dead.

It has oil paint brush and palette knife tools so you adjust how much thinner and how much paint to load on the brush head, so when you've pulled your stylus across the canvas the paint will behave something like an actual oil brush.

It also has watercolor tool.
I can talk and talk is cheap, the best way to find out is to download the trial version of it

I don't know about GIMP but with Krita I've never had any problems getting my questions answered or searching for answers for problems in the Krita subreddit. Often times a lot of questions are answered by the developers too because they are active in the subreddit.

I always feel like the best looking "traditional oil paint" and watercolor imitations I've seen are from artists who use art programs with simpler "stamp" and smudge brush engines that requires less resources to run. Artstation recently featured pic related on their twitter. It looks like the artist used one of those widely shared oil brush sets in photoshop.

I would just suggest experimenting with different painting brush sets. There's a ton on linked on this tumblr. Also may try experimenting with things like sharpening filters.

Also for imitating the look of watercolor, I like these tutorials. It seems like one of the most important things to do is to try to choose a lot of saturated colors and play with layer modes/textures.

Corel was just a victim of the times and better more versatile competition coming out, with Clip Studio Paint pretty much blowing it out of the water with also having many of the vital functions of Photoshop

I believe it's way faster and easier to just try to imitate the look of traditional media instead of try to simulate it.

These watercolor brushes in pic related are apart of Kyle's brush set which I think can easily installed on Photoshop CC. They closely imitate the watercolor brush strokes.

I rarely see any newer established artists using it. It seems like most pro artists who aren't using photoshop have moved on to CSP. I remember seeing painter used more often a few years ago.

Out of the many videos I've seen only Artgerm and Kazuki Takahashi(yugioh's creator) uses it to some good extent.

Otherwise people use Sai/CSP, concept artists use PS exclusively, then some just use both.

I watched his process video and he lays down his base colors by manually painting and erasing outside the borders. Definitely an old-school digital artist. Admire his line quality and confidence so much though.

This is inherently false and misleading old myth. Photoshop has since the late 90s been designed with artists in mind. They just keep the name but photoshop is closer to an image creator than a photo editor nowadays. Consider the powerful 3d tools, tablet support, the fact that abode also shills it as an art program too. If photoshop wasn't for painting they'd have released a new program by now.

A lot of CC subs don't realize you can download all his brushes free from one place. I didn't even have to be logged in but I think that's changed now. I found most of them far too gimmicky and deleted them but found decent dry media, watercolor, oil, and splatter/texture brushes.

If I'm doing digital I'm doing digital. It's easier to use my watercolors and scan than try to replicate it with 10x the work. That said I've taken some of the techniques to digital like leaving the whiteness of the paper and darkening some of the edges of fields of color. Backruns look terrible in watercolor but fine digitally when they're not trying to look like trad backruns.
