tldr of it all: do plenty of studies but when you go to draw personal work don't look for a reference before you even start drawing

If you’re studying mindfully you’re filling your visual library so you have a place to start when you do personal work. If you’re mindlessly copying your studies then yes the symbols will deceive you and you will never be anything more than a xeroxing faggot

Whenever you copy a reference, try to draw it from different angles, turned around, from the back etc.
You might do shitty at first, but you'll learn.

I think a lot of artists use this method as well. I don’t really get it. I always need a clear idea of what I want to draw before I start.

break everything down to abstraction. recompose with art concepts. find abstractions that you like or look really nice. play with how they compose with others. repeat. now you're doing art.
