Is it too late to be classically trained? I do work in pen and I've been stuck in this 'anime-vibe' but have done my best to pull away from it and try to do more realistic works. Pic related.
Problem is this stupid anime shit is embedded into my pool of knowledge that I don't know how else to draw. Can I even be classically trained anymore? I'm 28 is it too late or can I pull myself out of it?

What does anime have to do with your lack of skill? Your perspective sucks, your proportions are crap, the figure is flat, stiff and off-balance and your rendering is typical beginner pillow shading where everything is lit evenly, without a proper light source giving clear definition to the forms and plane changes.

The character drawn there is supposed to be freakishly tall. The nose is supposed to be gigantic. As for a flat figure I agree, it is stiff and off balance. Pillow shading? That's a bit harsh I hardly consider that to be pillow shading... Regardless I want to learn more and know I am not that good at a lot of classical training because I never had that training. All I did was just learning by drawing. Only had a few art teachers to fill out my art credits for high school. Here is another example of work for a human just so you know my understanding of anatomy while not good... I don't think it's horrible either. It reminds me of like a classical medieval drawing where the movement of characters are very restricted and rigid.

Thanks anon but I want to get better... it's hard to figure out where to start. I've been trying to draw realism by looking at a photo but my understanding of color is pure garbage and its hard for me to grasp so far. Advice?

this one has a good pose, but i know you traced the figure off of dark souls concept art. Don't be discouraged of stealing shit for the purpose of learning though.

Shading is pretty good considering how weak your anatomy is. Look up how to do dynamic poses, and make sure your anatomy is on point especially when doing armours or it will stand out like a dead dog.

And yes, you can be "classically trained". Either pay up and get yourself in college/art school/whatever the fuck is the best place nowadays (easy way)
or buckle up, get your ass on your chair and learn how to draw by yourself (hard way)

I actually did not trace that drawing. I did that by hand. though the dark souls pose and dark souls armor design is an inspiration to me.

the pose is just identical, but im not assuming shit (this angle and pose has basically become a crutch for drawing armors). Still it's good to trace and pick colors from appealing pieces to see what works and what doesn't
