I want to buy a drawing tablet. I actually got quite a bit of money but I'm not that skilled of an artist yet. I am very serious about wanting to become an artist though. Should I buy an overpriced Wacom tablet for more than a 1,000 dollars or should I just start with a Chinese knock off that costs like 400? Supposedly they are only slightly worse but if it sucks I'll have wasted my money.

Neither of them. With a large intuos you'll be fine.
Don't waste your money in a overly expensive tablet like i did.

That's terrible advice. It would be about the same price as the knock off and the lack of a screen seriously limits your skills. Why wouldn't I just buy the knock off then?

I'm leaning towards that as well. If I ever get really good then I'll buy the best equipment there is. I'm just wondering if someone has a counterargument or knows something I don't

not having a screen won't limit your skills. I still use an Intuos 4 and it's given me no problem or inconvenience. You'll grow to appreciate the fact that none of your canvas is blocked from your vision after your hand-eye coordination improves.

That's an interesting point. I've never drawn digitally before but you also have that blocked vision issue when you draw non digitally though. Most masterpieces were drawn like that. Doesn't a lack of screen bother you when you have to restate a line slightly or if you have to find where to draw after you've lifted your hand from your tablet?

well, I'm kinda used to it now. it honestly doesn't take that long to get used to it and subconsciously adjusting. Muscle memory is more powerful than you think. I've become so used to it now that i sometimes feel "off" drawing in traditional media, because i;m not used to a hand in my artwork, and seeing it from a slightly different angle, and my lines always bend a little off course.
Whatever you get, you'll soon get comfortable with it, so i recommend you get whatever you can affor, at least for now

Huion Kamvas is what I'd get if I had the dough. I haven't used wacom yet, but the chinks have never let me down, so I don't see a reason to spend that much extra.

For what it's worth, I used an Intuos 4 from 2009 to 2015, and then I switched to a Cintiq. I felt like the Intuos was totally fine, and I felt very comfortable using it for work. However, I upgraded to a large Cintiq and I personally could never, ever go back to a non-screened drawing tablet. I was blown away by how much i enjoyed the workflow, and it felt much more different & better than I anticipated. My workflow changed, I worked faster, made less mistakes, and enjoyed digital drawing so much more on a Cintiq than I did with my Intuos. More than anything, it made drawing fun again instead of feeling like 'work'.

I think if you're interested in a tablet with a screen, you should definitely go for it. I'd say it's worth it.

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head. Drawing with an intous just seems tedious and not enjoyable to me. I'm real happy for that guy that he can draw well with one but I'm not like that. I've made up my mind. I'll buy the rice ball tablet and by the time it breaks I'll probably be enough of an artist to be comfortable investing enough money to buy whatever real gear I want.

I own the one pictured. 24HD Cintiq. It's a game changer, it's the coolest thing I've ever bought, and it's a joy to work with. Mine is on two computer arms for more movement/angles than the ridiculously heavy stock base, tho.

If you don't know FOR SURE that you want to pursue art, don't buy one. Mine was $2500. Selling it would be a pain in the ass, because of how much shipping would be. (It was delivered by Yellow Freight, not UPS) A cheap Chinese monitor tablet is probably better, as they're lighter and easier to resell.

Screens aren't great either. You're hand gets in the way of what you can see and unlike paper you can't intuitively look around it.

Literally everyone starts off with a medium or large intuos.
