I think he's talking about seeing shapes as explained on Keys to Drawing.
I've always wondered if everyone uses construction when drawing. For most of my life I had drawn by seeing things as flat shapes. It didn't work out too badly but once I found /ic/ people said I had to learn construction, but then the first book on pic related is Keys to drawing. Granted I started with Huston but I remember KTD starts by asking you to draw contours.
So are this 'methods' used interchangeably or is the drawing without construction thing just the first stage of drawing?
