As a setting specific problem, there is a place you can go deeper in the abyss that no one can survive the effects of coming back from.
Bondrewd studies similar effects in other parts of the Abyss and discovers that such penalty effects can be reduced somewhat by travelling in a group, but only if there is a strong emotional connection there where one person takes some of the load off of another person unconciously.
Bondrewd build the 'cartridge system' to maximize this effect.
He starts by taking in an orphan, and then is the Best Dad Ever for weeks. Long enough to make the kid love him. Emotionally manipulating children is easy.
He does this until the thought of what comes next makes him physically ill, because thats how he knows he cares enough about the child in turn for this to work.
Then he drugs the kid, and surgically removes everything but the brain and some minimal vital organs, cramming the still living parts into something the size of a tupperware container so he can plug it into his backpack. He can keep them alive like this for days to weeks. The next time he goes down into the Abyss, the kid dies instead of him on the way back up as his gear displaces the curse entirely on the cartridge.
He has done this many, many times. And he remembers the name of every one.
Bonus round: he says that after his research progresses past the point of needing cartridges, he would like to adopt a child for real because he rather enjoys being a dad. Ick!
