>The characters are bland, the art is generic, and there's little to set it apart from any other Batman story other than the aforementioned shock momentWrong, and it was hardly shocking considering more shocking moments have happened far longer before that, including the death of Robin, the paralysis of Batgirl, and the killing of the Joker, twice, not to mention Batman was "broken" in The Dark Knight Returns, which means that if the moment itself wasn't "truly shocking", that means we're left with the execution, of which it is done superbly by a number of writers.
As for the art, it varies because of how many different pencillers and inkers worked on it, but the good art there is, is fantastic.
