Yeah /an/ has flipped their shit whenever I mention how my family treats cats.
We live past the suburbs and into the boonies. We take our cats to the vets regularly and get them all their preventative care, we have spayed and neutered every cat we've owned.
We let them go out as much as they want, none of have a litter box, most of them spend the days outside and like to come in at night though a few over the years have went more outdoor, one in particular would only ever come inside during really bad thunderstorms. He weathered a few hurricanes outside to tell you what he considered bad.
Most of our cats live to the 14-16 year range which is just below the average of 17 year lifespan for indoor cats. I don't feel like I'm doing a disservice to them when compared to most every other cat I've met ours almost always seem happier.
