It's kinda weird, when I think about it. Only people in my generation have seen games take such massive leap from generation to generation.
I mean, first you are playing with a blocky screen who try to pretend it's no ugly, next you are playing with amazing Pixel art on the SNES/Megadrive, only to have your way of playing completely changed with the advent of the 3D (and complain, a lot, about how everything is back to being Ugly again too), to see the 3D graphic getting great again. It's kind of a "you had to be there" moment. Each new console was really exciting, because of the leap it had. No major lap like that will be possible again.
