Darren Aronofsky was originally set to write and direct an R-rated version of 2013's THE WOLVERINE. This was his pitch. Would it have been better than what we ultimately got?

>In 1987, Logan is a broken man haunted by his past. After a bar brawl, he finds himself forgotten in prison, longing for death. Logan is approached by Zen, a representative of a secret order of ninjas known as "The Hand", that have served the Yashida clan for centuries. Zen offers Logan newfound purpose and accompanies him to Tokyo, where Logan learns that the Yashida family, led by Shingen Yashida, controls the criminal underworld in Japan.

>Logan becomes Shingen's enforcer and develops a sexual relationship with his protege Yukio, descending into a life of excesses, abusing alcohol and drugs and torturing Shingen's enemies and the innocents caught in the crossfire. Logan is eventually assigned to protect Shigen's daughter, Mariko Yashida, who is bethroted to corrupt Chief of Justice Noburo Moro, and rescues her from an assassination attempt engineered by Shingen's illegitimate son, Harada, who is determined to earn his father's favor.

>Logan and Mariko fall in love and develop a forbidden relationship. Harada finds out about it and informs Shingen, who attempts to have Logan killed. Logan challenges Shingen to a duel to earn Mariko's hand, in which he must not unveil his claws, but is then betrayed and poisoned by Yukio. During the fight, a disoriented and hallucinating Logan unveils his claws, dishonoring Mariko. He is then brutally beaten by Harada and his men and left for dead despite Yukio's pleas for him to be spared.
