Remember when Marco broke Jackie's board? There was a heart in the middle of it.

It was split in two.

This is obvious foreshadowing that Marco and Jackie will definitely break up. If this isn't enough (plus the fact that Marco and Star are already eternally bound by the blood moon), I don't know what is.

Yeah, I'm totally up for Jarco and all (not really a shipper I just enjoy the show), but it's been so obvious from the beginning that it will never last.

Thing is, this season is not going to have the "happy ending". Many animated shows have tragic (but maybe uplifting) endings to their respective seasons.

It's kind of like the U.S. Election. There is always more than one side, and at the end of the day, one group is going to be upset while the other will be happy. It's just how life works.

Thing is that Star has barely shown romantic feelings towards Marco until this episode.

It's not like for instance Dipper giving up on Wendy (which ended up happening like 8 times). It would just feel like a plot point that wasn't properly developed and then was dropped.

Jackie Lynn Thomas falls in love with Marco Diaz.

Unable to confess, she is gifted by a deus ex machina with her best friend's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, she immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on her as well.

But, the next day, when Jackie recounts the previous day's confessions to Marco, he only looks at her with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, she finds out that the boy she called is not the same boy she fell in love with. In fact, Diaz doesn't exist in this universe at all. The other Marco is the alternate universe counterpart of her crush, who has fallen in love with her AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.

Hijinks ensue as they strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip each other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of ALTERNATE LOVE.

They're both practically the same "CalArts," kinda Simpsons-looking art style. Star's might be slightly more detailed (eye colors, more realistic heights) but otherwise you can't really blame the /co/ CalArts hate squad for saying they look the same.

Also technically "romance" appears in Star in the 2nd episode if we're counting Marco's crush on Jackie and Star's eagerness to play wingman for him, which of course only led to cucking and tears. That might be nitpicking though.

I thought this too but around mid-season 1 to now I think the voice was sort of pulled back a bit and became more bearable. A little lower, less exaggerated high-pitched yelling, and so on.

So just watched the Blood Moon Ball

So yeah, exactly what I was looking for in this show.

So far I think it's fantastic. Even the episodes where nothing relevent happens its hilarious. Like, its been a long time since a cartoon actually made me laugh, and this show has done it.

This was my impression during the first season, that she was making them up on the spot, though some of the spells do recur. Not really a spoiler, but the most recent episode implied all the spells she uses do exist and have a purpose; she just might be reciting some at random and thus using them wrong because she doesn't pay much attention to her spellbook.

Could be a bit of a retcon, but since spells have been used more than once even in the first season it makes the show a bit more coherent on the whole.

Would like to see your thoughts on the season 1 finale.

I actually had similar thoughts as well while binge watching the whole first season this week.

I didn't mean it as a positive or negative for either show; just an observation. The sorta exaggeratedly toothy smiles and eyelashes on the female characters, generally round shapes, etc. Gravity Falls has some of the same features.

What I was more getting at is that when /co/ today talks about CalArts they do often try to describe the style as resembling Simpsons in simplicity re: how humanoid characters are drawn. Some of the original directors etc. were also CalArts alumni.

I think the styles of both shows are fine though.

I like the current style a lot more the pseudo-realistic style from the 80s, gi joe thundercats etc.

it's a lot easier on the eye when theyre in motion, and they can use deformation to make movement more pleasing

gi joe was great back in the day, but compared to the more animate star vs, everything seems so slow

Of course, this isn't to say that there are no similarities either, like those you mentioned. It stands to reason due to institutional effects. But they're still distinct styles each.

I get the desire to have a lot of current cartoons with different styles, but I think the style for Star looks perfect for the type of show it is.

I can't really think of anything that'd be gained with from the pseudo-realistic '80s style or the '90s Disney cartoon style. Wouldn't fit the humor and general action/pace of the show.

Unfortunately if all people see of it is a promotional image or one dumb screencap out of context, they judge it without seeing how it looks in motion or how it's storyboarded etc. I kind of still irrationally hate that one shot of Star in her princess dress freaking out over the wand in the first episode because of how it was spammed here before the premiere in "lookit this adventure time shit, animation sucks now" kinda threads.

I just remember the styles being considered similar here more often than differences being pointed out, and I sort of lean toward that myself, though not in a negative sense. It's probably a good thing the board's recently sort of moved away from ALL THESE SHOWS LOOK THE SAME though.

they were friends at best, friendly roommates at worst. both of them at one point or another straight up said they don't have feelings for the other. They had absolutely no *romantic* chemistry and still don't aside from sudden, one-sided jealousy. And that can be chalked up to the bloodmoon curse.

Jarco is the obvious and best endgame, but the fact it's coming to fruition so early suggests the writers are gonna screw it up somehow and make it starco in the end because they're retarded.

Janna would like it, because she'd get a hot magical demon to manipulate and do magic stuff for her, he'd make things "interesting", the same way she found Margo screaming in agony and writhing on the floor "interesting".

But she'd only care for Tom because of his species and family background, him being "a demon prince" - his actual personality isn't one that'd interest her at all. He likes cereal, boy bands, ping pong (has even won demon tournament awards and has a table in his room), videogames, generic shit. He's got arcade games and a basketball hoop in his room, he doesn't seem to be particularly into the occult outside from stuff he naturally knows as part of his culture. He's emotionally vulnerable and has anger issues and needs a support system.

Janna is similar to Star in the sense that they get along, but Star isn't good for Tom either, she was driving him mad a lot in BMB. Marco is the one who gets along with Tom and is a good influence on him, liking him for who he is and his interests and company. If it wouldn't be gay and interfere with starco, Tomco would be the best ship for Tom. It does however, so it's unlikely, and instead some girl who has the similar skills to value Tom for his interests and personality and support and calm him down would be better. (Notably, Marco can't stand Janna either).

Janna x Tom is like a hardcore yellow fever weeaboo lusting after a japanese girl, ANY japanese girl, their kawaii hime-chan from glorious Nippon because asian girls are sooooo much better than degenerate western bitches with no class, expecting them to be a walking stereotype, and not really giving a shit about their personality or actual interests (and even acting disappointed when hime-chan's personality and likes clash with their expectations).

Well you're talking about two characters who have yet to even interact. Until that point there can be no assurances on how well or not well the two characters will get on. There's also ways you could swing the two getting on; that touch of the occult, their manipulative tendencies, messing with Marco and I would imagine a few other options.

I would also put forward that Marco actually confronting Tom's issues was the key to him starting to work on them. As such, having someone who would confront his issues may be what he actually needs to stop being such an angry jerk.

No, not at all. He'd gotten the anger management coach on his own before he ever met Marco. Also according to Nefcy in an interview she gave before BMB aired,

So he's already working on them on his own, and pointing them out like what Star was doing at BMB ("Wait, are you getting mad?") isn't working at all. What did work was how Marco reacted to him getting angry, instead of blaming him for getting mad he found an alternate way to deal with the upset.

How effectively he was actually working on his anger issues is debatable, given the first thing he did was try to win Star back by ignoring said issues instead of acknowledging and dealing with the behaviours or thoughts leading to it. Star's identification of said repressed issues isn't the sort of confrontation I'm mean, obviously.

Marco found a way of confronting the presence of anger, but acting in a way that didn't have the usual negative consequences, which is an active take on directly dealing with the behavioural issue as opposed to a more supportive take on it.

In addition, the first real sign of lasting change in attitude shown by Tom was in Mr. Candle Cares which was the result of Marco directly confronting one of Tom's attitude problems, that appears to have had a lasting effect given his actions in Friendenemies.

I don't think it's fair to downplay the significant determination and work Tom has been putting into changing himself already before the BMB, nor the word-of-god statement from Nefcy that Tom is working on his anger issues mainly because he doesn't want his heritage to define his identity, and not mainly as a way to get Star back.

Claiming that "the first real sign of change in attitude" would be after Marco isn't accurate at all imo. The first sign of change in attitude was him recognising he's got a problem, wanting and deciding to get rid of it, and getting help. All the continuous little steps he keeps making throughout and his reactions to things stem from that, from him already having the desire to be a better person and just realising the flaws in his views one by one.

But again, I don't think Janna is the type of person who'd mesh well with Tom. Her way of addressing things is way too smug and in-your-face. With Marco, who she might have a crush on, it's belittling, ridicule, teasing bordering on bullying, and continuously ignoring the other person's wishes (stop it). With Star, it's obvious frustration ("are you STILL hung up on this") and blatantly indicating her she finds her anxiety boring and stupid and wants to go back to her own interest instead of dealing with what's bugging Star ("I deleted your pic from your phone, let's stop talking about this").

She addresses the worries of other people if she gets amusement from teasing them. If she doesn't, she'd rather ignore everything and refocus on something she gets amusement from.

That's not what I said, I outlined how his approach to pursuing Star involved ignoring his anger issues to obvious detrimental effects, an issue of effectiveness in dealing with anger issues which was the point being expressed. I would also argue that it is fair to downplay things not shown in the show in comparison to things shown in the actual show. The golden rule of show don't tell applies here, though I do acknowledge that Daron providing more background for Tom and his issues is something that should be considered.

Well that's down to interpretation, I wouldn't consider the identification and seeking of help for attitude issues the same as actually making headway on the causes for said issue which is what we actually saw in Mr. Candle Cares. Also, we didn't actually see that moment of problem recognition and seeking help, he's already gone through that when we're first introduced to him and given how he's presented by Star and his actions in general it's understandable that his actual commitment to dealing with his issues is questionable.

Well you're certainly free to think that, but you have to recognise that some of the reasons you think she may not fit with him could easily be swung the other way, or just flat out not apply the same way given they're different characters. For example your point on her frustration with Star stems from how her and Star usually interact, Star's acting in a way that doesn't match up with her usual self in the middle of this big event they'd both been looking forward to. Her response made sense in that context, as did her actions, Star's worrying about something she has no influence over and should rightly stop fixating on it, deleting the picture was a good way of achieving that.

Again, the point is how effectively he was shown to be dealing with his actual issues, and the answer was not very well. It's all well and good trying to work on behavioral issues, but not doing so effectively rather defeats the whole point as was put forward in Friendenemies, just as the real signs of positive change were put forward too thanks to Marco's input, both from an anger management and attitude change perspective.

What's shown in the show is always the key thing to consider, that's how a visual medium works. Having input from the creators is certainly valuable, but what the audience is actually shown is the important bit. Considering Tom's not interacted with Janna yet, declaring how their interactions are going to go down with no acknowledgement of the range of potential outcomes is ridiculous. I'd throw the same green text retort back at you, but that'd be fucking stupid.

I haven't seen KonoSuba. Based on the wiki page I'd say probably not.

Madoka is sort of a deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre. It's about hope, despair and friendship and the price of magic, with a special mention on the mounting sense of desperation - it's what really made me consider it a great show. I hadn't watched magical girl stuff at all, had always thought it's a bit juvenile and silly, but I really liked Madoka. If you want happy, funny or cheerful stuff it's not for you though. In emotional tone it's probably closer to Death Note or Psycho Pass or Mirai Nikki or Ergo Proxy or Neon Genesis Evangelion than funny happy shows.

I'm sure you like your ship and thus are eager to twist and interpret things so that it's believable they'd totally become different people when they meet each other, a completely never-before-seen side of Janna would just emerge and Tom would just magically develop the thick skin and whatever-chill necessary to cope with Janna, sure. Remember that official poster than said 'Star Verses the Forces of Evil'? That's the confirmation that the vs. in the title stands for VERSES not the usual VERSUS. As in spell verses. Now read the title again. Star verses: the forces of evil. In the latest episode Star used one of the evil verses to spy on Marco and Jackie. The show is not about Star fighting the forces of evil at all, it's about her using black magic verses to invoke the forces of evil. Jackie and Marco will have to defeat her in the end.

Actually, neitherbhas at any point expressed that they dont like the other that way. Marco only ever says that he and Star are friends. But, given his obviously jealousy at Tom and Star for going to the Ball, and that he clearly finds her attractive in the same episode, romantic feelings were, and perhaps still are developing.
You also chalk up Stars jealousy to blood moon, and thats retarded. First of all, the only nod to the blood moon we saw was when Marco had a vision of it, not Star. Secondly, even if Star had scene a vision of it, we still dont actually know what the bloodmoon even did, so its not a point of discussion.
The fact of the matter is that Jarco being endgame would be shitty writing. Passing off one episode where the characters exchange some of the most awkward dialogue of the show as complete romantic development is shitty writing.
Marco is eventually going to realise that the biggest appeal Jackie had was her unobtainability, and that now that he had her, that quality is lost. They're going to grow apart, and it will lead to Marco questioning what he actually wants from a romantic relatio ship. Maybe that'll lead to Starco, maybe it wont. Only someone completely removed from reality would actually think Jarco is endgame, and since here you are, shitposting on an image board for cartoons, that may just be the case.
