Edgy things are rarely grim or anything, they're generally just absurd. It's usually more about the execution, as well.
For example, a small-time criminal with track marks is, perhaps, edgy without being 'edgy'. A small time criminal who growls something about how being a junkie has turned him into a monster and how the noble protagonist is just a pawn of the MAN, that's probably 'edgy'.
