why didnt he just jump through the first portal if he had no qualms about erasing an entire timeline? why even help people if he was going to erase them from existence anyway?

Samurai Jack was about a man who was good and righteous, who had to change so he could defeat a monster who was evil and cunning. Jack learned from many good teachers across the world, but In the beginning he was too naive and let his guard down when he first fought Aku. In fact he was pretty gullible during his first few years in the future. After the time skip, we see a completely different Jack. He got hard, darker and less noble. This Jack would not hesitate to jump into a time portal even if his monk brothers were in danger. When he finally returns to the past, he does not hesitate in killing Aku. In this way, you could say his time in the future or Aku himself was Jack's final test/mentor.

see the thing is, he might go back in time and LOSE
that means he has to clean up the future the best he can
he can go back in a portal IF there's nothing else at stake, at the time, immediately. because then his conscience is clean, he didn't let anyone be hurt by inaction. if he goes back, and dies, oh well. he's not obligated to stick around and be the future's policeman forever.
It's weird to me how many people have so much trouble with this, because it's not exactly rocket science, even if it is more complicated than just 'gotta get back'

i always feel that jack true destiny was not return back to save the past but stay and save the future.

this, half a dozen episodes end with Jack learning to appreciate the changed world of the future. It’s amazing how Genndy and co. didn’t realize how weak the “back to the past” aspect of the plot was compared to literally everything else in the show.

Because it seemed that Gendy and Co totally forgot they were developing Jacks character more and more and hinting towards him accepting the past is in the past, and that the only thing that matters now is preventing Aku from causing anymore harm to the present, and creating a better future for the friends, and those he saved.
Only this seemed to be something we the viewers only interpreted, and that he was legit focused the entire time on getting back to the past despite everything he'd seen and experienced.

No matter how Samurai jack ended, I'm happy we got season 5 regardless. The first three episodes were kino enough to make me excuse any problems thereafter.

There was a perfect out to have Jack save the past and the future. Just have future Aku chase Jack to the past and merge with his old self. Instead we got that "bittersweet" ending

I completely agree.
At least confirm that the people in the future don't disappear, or something.
Also, the romance was weak as hell. But at least it pissed off fujoshits, so it wasn't all bad.

Pretty much.

The show actualy had episodes that REINFORCED Jack continue his quest for finding a portal to the past. It was never about accepting destiny, it was about reaching your goal for righteouness.
