Original Trek and most of TNG was “you don’t know everything that’s out there, and sometimes WEIRD shit happens.” Like the cosmos was so full of weird things you could still come across an alien probe that turns all the women in to sexed up bridge bunnies for an hour until the men get tired of their constant demands for sex and they develop the cure and everyone has a laugh the nature of being human.
These days, it’s all season long arcs about the latest existential threat, and nothing surprising happens that tells you “even with star ships, humanity is a long way from understanding everything in the universe”.
