They use a lot of public domain properties while actively changing the laws to prevent anyone else from using properties that they've used. Mickey Mouse and Steamboat Willie should have entered the public domain several times already, but they keep altering the copyright laws.

I have explained like a million of times:

-Tezuka and Disney tried to work together in a jungle tantei movie
-they work for months in a storyboard
-Disney wants to do other stuff and Tezuka gets mad
-movie goes nowhere and they just shut it down
-years later tezuka dies
-Disney recycles the idea but changes it enough so they don't have to give tezuka any recognition
-Tezuka's family sues Disney
-Disney wins
-Disney makes even more Lion king movies but they basically don't resemble in any way the original idea
-this thread is made

It's not an evil uncle, it's an evil aunt. There is an evil lion with a scar that looks like Scar but he's not Kimba's uncle. Yes they definitely used ideas that were lifted from Kimba, the father's ghost appearing in the clouds is the most audacious one. However, Lion King is undeniably better than Kimba, it's a better story. The situation is super fucking shitty and there would've been a lot more hubbub if Tezuka had still been alive.

Look, it's an established thing in animation that you set out wanting to adapt a certain property, then you can't, so you recycle the preliminary work you put in
Japan does it all the time. Panda Kopanda started out as a Pippi Longstocking adaptation. and Miyazaki was originally working on Nadia before abandoning it, but you can tell part of what he contributed turned into Laputa (funny since Nadia's a soft adaptation of 20,000 leagues and Laputa is from gulliver)
lion king probably did start out as a kimba adaptation but there's very little kimba left in it, aside from a few inspired shots like cloud-dad and whatnot.

Lion King on Kimba was for its time definitely actionable plagiarism. It's just at the time nobody knew or cared about Japanimation (and Japan didn't care about American animation enough to complain) and these days no one cares about plagiarism.

I think that's the most notable instance of Disney theft. Most of the recent ones like that Zootopia nonsense are just hot air.

The problem isn't Disney borrowing elements/being inspired by Kimba. It's that our society is so litigious, so greedy, and so prideful that they can't acknowledge that they did.

I'm sure many creatives who worked on Lion King wanted to. I'm sure they wanted to say they were fans of Osamu Tezuka. But Disney has to control the narrative. The only shoulders they are allowed to stand on is Walt Disney's.

Kimba and Lion King have a bunch of similar moments and imagery of African animals in African settings, but the stories go to different places. Tezuka was interested in how anthropomorphic animals would interact with humans, and that was probably the most important plot thread in Kimba's story. Lion King revolved around Simba's family drama and didn't even mention humans.
(Note: I'm talking about the original manga and the 1997 movie. I haven't seen the 1965 animated series which a lot of comparison screenshots tend to be taken from, and I'm not sure if it had more focus on animals.)

IMO it's likely that Lion King started out as a Kimba adaptation but things didn't work out, and they ended up using the plot fragments for an original movie. At least Broderick has mentioned that he thought he was making a Kimba movie, so I think people at Disney must've been aware of the similarities. But their legal team must've forbidden them to actually admit it out loud.

I'm not as familiar with the Nadia/Atlantis controversy, so I can't comment on that one.

Only his Steamboat Willy incarnation will lapse. But that's just the copyright. They still own the trademark (which doesn't expire) so they can use that to stop any unauthorized uses of that Mickey. That's why they've been pushing a bunch of merch with that design the last few years and the little clip with him whistling before their movies to show that Mickey's face is synonymous with the Disney company like a logo. The real question is how they will tackle this when it comes to the other characters like Goofy and Donald.

Nah eat shit, Kimba story is objectivelly better, Simba is filled with pointless bullshit that is completelly irrelevant to the character development like eating bugs because the hacks who wrote the movie wanted to steal the eating plants part but didn't find a way to make it part of the plot overall.

Kimba character development is way better, he don't magically turn into a better person because of his fucking cloud father, he slowly develop new views like how every life is important and be more altruistic.

That one is just misinterpretation based from the fact that both Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Nadia of Blue Seas were strongly and openly influenced by the works of Jules Verne, specifically 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It should be no shock that they share a few visual themes, as they're both roughly based in the same source material. Storywise, they really don't share much in common, even if they have a few similar shots in them. And even that's a little questionable as a comparision considering that you could probably find a lot of extremely similar shots in plenty of other anime and manga.
