This week's episode is a test case, then, determining just how well the formula works when the humor takes a backseat to character drama and pathos. We got a deeper look at Rita's past and learned that her occasionally unsightly exterior is really just a manifestation of her inner pain and guilt. We got some more colorful language from Cliff (making this the first and surely only DC series to ever include the word "f***knuckle") and an amusing, very brief side-story featuring the return of Animal Vegetable Mineral Man. Those moments were very welcome, but not quite enough to offset the darker elements of the script. This is yet another reason why I wish Mr. Nobody would stick around to narrate every single episode.

Why has no one figured out yet that The Chief is using Rita to stay young? In the Opening sequence, they show a little dish of melting goo with a spoon in it sitting on the arm of his wheelchair. Chief is clearly a bad guy or at least a selfish prick who just uses people. He keeps Larry around so he can study the energy being. He keeps Rita around for Immortality, and Clif is testing his prototype replacement body for when his body finally craps out. He's only nice and caring with them in order to manipulate them, manipulation has always been central to his character.

I think we learned a lot about Chief this episode, and none of it was good. Whether he was taking advantage of the original Doom Patrol or not, that’s up in the air, but what isn’t is that he abandoned a group of people that needed him, and that trusted him and that he lead into a fight they couldn’t win. He ruined their lives and he walked away from them when they became inconvenient.

If they are doing the Morrison twist, and Chief is responsible for the accidents that made the second Doom Patrol, I can see him doing it so that he can have a group of people that can protect him from his enemies, and that will shower him with the love and adulation that he thinks he deserves. Just the idea that he was going to send Jane to live in that asylum, and that shot of the heavy duty lock on her door at Caulder’s mansion...this show is going to tear our hearts out by the end of the season. Mark my words.

I know the thread likes to bash Jane but honestly she's not that bad. Sure, she's my least favorite of the cast, but that's not saying much with these guys. I'm just using this as a testament to how damn fine the writing and acting for this character has been, it's always worth noting when someone steals the show for the best reasons. I still have hope I'll like Jane more because multiple-power characters are some of my favorites, but she's got a huge uphill battle to be as interesting as Cyborg.

I legit cannot believe I just typed that.

I think it's just that the fact that the show has an interesting take on the character. Plus he's a bit of a driving force that kicks everyone into gear and his issues with his dad are relatable while also being intersting since we don't fully know what's going on there, which I think is extra interesting for fans of the comics who have a rough idea of how Larry, Cliff , The Chief and Jane are going to play out (maybe Rita as well, I could see her arc building her up for a heroic sacrifice deal.)

I think he read her mind on a whim which was still pretty fucked up thing to do since it's an invasion of someone's privacy(although no one gives a shit when the X-men do it constantly), and a breach of trust especially after he said he wouldn't do it without her consent. But it's also an incredibly human thing to do because a lot of people would do it if they thought they could get away with it.

But what Steve saw Rita do to that woman (and I'm guessing she might have been another actress who was in a role Rita wanted) that drove her to commit suicide must have been really horrible for him to think of her as a monster. And yeah another anon brought it up that Mento didn't care about her physical deformities and her turning into a blob but what he saw her do to that woman was so bad he instantly did not want anything to do with her. It makes me wonder what exactly is that she did.

Also Rita forgiving him in the end just made me love her even more.

But yes all these characters have a lot of faults and have done fucked up things in their past that they are ashamed of or are afraid of being confronted of. They are all flawed and have skeletons in their closet and are tortured by it. They aren't 100% squeaky clean but they at least try.

Also the way she treats Cliff gets annoying as fuck. Yeah I get she's damaged and on the defense and wants to find Niles Caulder because he's the only one she feels cared about her but damn at least have her feel sorry for some of the shit she throws at Cliff or any of the other characters.

I did enjoy her personality in the last episode, the one that has the power to persuade people, she was interesting and her running from her rapist in today's episode was also good too.

I feel in addition to your point they abuse the Hammerhead persona way too much, there's a shitton of personas that would be absolutely wonderful and entertaining to see sprinkled out instead of just superbitchwhohits again and again. Hammerhead is a one note character, which shouldn't be a problem for a multiple personality character but they use her so much it gives the perception that Jane herself is very one note and boring, and I think she has potential.

Well yeah. In terms of abilities in the original silver age run, he's pretty high up there with mister 103 which can turn into any elements (basically evil metamorpho), and they usually had to use one of niles inventions to stop him. And arguably he was the first villain who became so specifically as revenge against the chief (former student who believed niles stole his ideas), which was later used for other villains.

But while being inspired by the comics, this series seems determined to do it's own thing.

I wouldn't 100% take that as a guess that a show is coming. People have been asking for a Lemire Animal Omni for years (partly because there was a hardcover of Snyder's Swamp Thing already made - which by the way, looks like it might be OOP soon), and Lemire is a name that can sell.
I haven't looked, but the New 52 AM trades might be OOP or going OOP too.

we've only seen a little of Jane's personalities so far. The episode with Doctor Harrison coming out, and the circumstances make me believe that Jane's personalities are a layered defense designed to stop Kay from ever coming back out, which they essentially were in the comics. I think here it'll be slightly more systematic, and towards the final layers of her defenses there'll be some extremely powerful beings, which Chief may want to exploit.

I just realized that Keith Giffen isn't included in the special thanks at the start of the episode previews. That's surprising since outside of the Silver Age that's the only run they really have to work with for Rita material. It's where protoplasm Rita comes from. They're using Larry's design from that run too, but it's hard to tell when the coat is on (really it's like 80/20 Giffen/Morrison).

Constantine first appeared in Moore's Swamp Thing.

The thing that I love about that scene is how it would be played for laughs if it was in the comics. It would be some bizarre, absurdist shit but the art style would also make it abstract.

However, you play it out with human actors, and it's horrific. Like, people haven't complained about it, but plenty have remarked that this Nobody is more malevolent than the comics, I'd say that seeing his antics played out in flesh and blood robs them of their seeming innocence in the comics.

I wouldn't say it's a complaint necessarily, but I'm definitely a little disappointed about that. I understand that it's a concession for the format though. If he's going to be the season's over-arcing villain he kind of has to be more malevolent, and I can accept it.

Seeing how miserable they all are once the facade was revealed as Joshua detailing how their battle with Nobody went down as a real gut punch. It was a much more effective way of mindfucking the current DP and establishing Nobody as a threat than the Cloverton donkey in episode 2. The music really made it hit home.

Okay you are confusing what happened in the comics to what happened in young justice. What happened in the comics was that rita managed to convince dayton to adopt gar instead of his legal guardian, galtry, who was stealing his inheritance, and stayed as his step father after rita died. Young justice essentially combined dayton and galtry together.

However,what happened in the comics was that thanks to overusing the mento helmet to help out constantine, mento became stark raving mad and tried to kill gar and the titans until raven managed to reconnect him with gar with her empath powers. However he unexplicably became bad again in the guise of the "crimelord", being obsessed with killing slade. Stupid bullshit basically.

I'd imagine if they announce international availability, it'd be when they're announcing other stuff so that it's easier to spread the word; so maybe launch date announcements as early as the Wonder-Con panel this week, or maybe not until San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Likable and Watchable are not the same. There can be a character you hate with a burning fury that's still enjoyable to watch. I like Jane, but you can't say that her actress' performance hasn't been grating. Though, it's mostly the writer's fault for overusing Hammerhead.

To be fair we don't know his actual motivations, but I do think this portrayal of him as threatened by the Doom Patrol to the point of going out of his way to intimidate them makes him feel surprisingly non-powerful.

I don't really see him going out of his way, though. I see him laying little traps behind him so that he can do whatever it is that he's doing with Caulder. I don't see him as being threatened, I see him as needing to distract the group of super people that's trying to stop his Evil Machinations.
