>>106510596I’ve got a few thoughts on this one, and keep in mind I’ve hated the MCU past the first phase (minus WS and GOTG) and the DCEU.
On one hand, the humor is done right here. Even if some of it feels improvised, it still feels natural to the events. I got a good smile out of a few moments, and because the tone stays consistent and makes sense to be there, it doesn’t feel obnoxious and hard to swallow like with MCU movies. The actors also ooze charisma in a way a lot of other cape shit movies just don’t have. That has definitely won me over more than I expected.
On the other hand, I’ve always loved Captain Marvel, and I feel like as an adaptation it’s not doing the source material service. While Billy’s childlike characteristics would come out at times, generally Marvel is more than just Billy, he’s Billy with insight and wisdom that shapes him into someone more heroic than how he normally is. I also hate this version of Sivana, and I will always dislike him being called “Shazam” instead of Captain Marvel. So as a fan, the movie turns me off.
I think it might be a Hellboy thing, where I enjoy it as its own movie, but not as an adaptation.
