The USA used to dominate with the silver age, but then Japan stated to catch up with Astro Boy and then Dragon Ball, to now surpass the USA

I'd think this bait but when I was a kid I didn't see through the abject laziness of anime either.

Even the best TV anime is about 13 minutes of various stills against throwaway backgrounds, a few 20-second chunks of moderately expensive animation here and there (if we're lucky enough to have an episode with any fighting at all), and 4 minutes plus of betweeners, opening and closing credits to fill out a slot. The whole style is predicated on doing as little animation as possible because animation is expensive. That's why characters who are speaking are off-screen, wearing masks or holding their hands in front of their mouths for at least half of their lines. (Show a close-up still of someone listening to them instead and move their mouth-line once to show that they're reacting to it.) That's why the action (and therefore super-secret deadly invisible sword style) is lightning-fast, so that animators only have to produce a handful of difficult frames and with a minimum of detail. What looks like "fluidity" to you is simply rapid succession of very different frames of characters who do everything at ninja speed in order to accommodate the studio's budget.

The scene in this gif is about four frames of character animation and about 5 frames of whooshy effects to better indicate motion. The illusion works well enough for the style. The style follows the limitations of inexpensive production that has been the rule since this poor-ass burned-out country decided to make Gigantor. Go watch some fucking Looney Tunes to see some actual craftsmanship and fluidity, not to mention the expressiveness and caricature that justify animating in the first place.

The anime market is better at squeezing money out of specific niches (including history-nerds)
Cross-promotion with the music/manga industry and production committees split up the risk and make shows easier to produce.
Like with any media the vast majority is low-quality, but the sheer volume of shows every year means you're more likely to find something you're interested in.

Though saying it's definitively surpassed Western animation is ridiculous, it's still mostly niche outside of Japan and many find the frequent animation shortcuts intolerable

Ren & Stimpy is firmly rooted in Golden Age cartoon traditions, including the animation/drawing principles and production methods. What actually happened was that the Golden Age cartoonists moved towards "simple" minimalist/modernist art styles in the 1950s and early 1960s, then the next generation(s) of animators copied the superficial aspects of that later stuff without learning the classic art fundamentals that their predecessors had started off with.

It's not just "a few" bad sculptures. All the sculptures take a noticeable dive in quality post roman collapse. Look into it. Painting and illustration fared even worse. The Romans actually had depth perspective. I don't know about you, but that blows my mind. It's something that wasn't rediscovered in painting until the 1400s, which kicked off what most consider the first golden age of European art.

I love gothic cathedrals, but according to wiki this, the Basilica of Saint-Denis, was the first in 1144. Already when Europe is well recovering from the hangover of the dark ages. Things only get better from there. Notably other arts such as writing pick up around this period as well.

I also think that there's a big problem with artists not being brought up with the fundamentals. Prior to the current ugly cartoon craze, you had the "flat modernist" cartoon craze, which was largely the result of people trying to copy the superficial aspects of stuff like pic related without caring/realizing that the guys who made it only got there after starting on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit or Steamboat Willie and spending 20-30 years working towards the more "stylish" stuff.

I honestly think western animation aesthetics suffer from a lack of criticism. For some reason we as a culture have become inured to low quality and expect slightly below average art styles.

Cultures just seem to do this sometimes. They normalize weakness, mediocrity, failure. Eastern european religious art got so used to ugly flat images for hundreds of years it eventually got rethought of as a "unique cultural style" (while western European proceeded to BTFO of them).

Walt Disney himself saw the potential of animation for people of all ages, and at one point wanted to make an action-packed John Carter of Mars movie aimed at men, but the only movies he made which weren't financial disappointments were his princess movies.

In fact, Fantasia was supposed to be the first of his adult movies (hence, centaur boobs), but it bombed so hard that the only thing keeping the Walt Disney Company afloat through the 1940's was the work that he did for the War Department and later for the State Department. And once that well dried up, Walt knew that his company had the resources to make one more movie -- which turned out to be Cinderella, which single-handedly turned Disney from a failing enterprise into the entertainment juggernaut that it is today.

Westerners just don't value willful suspension of disbelief the way that the Japanese do. In Japan, it's not unusual to see businessmen in their 60's reading manga on the train. In America, people dump all their money on their kids. The periphery markets in the west simply just aren't there, the only way to make money with animation in the west is with family movies, as it's no longer politically correct to make movies about dumb young women who fail their way through life until the man of their dreams comes along and rescues them.

And yes, he did want to make "serious" and "respectable" animation, but as part of a larger body of work. What he really wanted and tried hard to make was animation that was high quality. The habit of hiring actual artists with traditional skills, the habit of making them always work from life, and building 3-D models of every character so that everyone was animating the same character. Disney basically wrote the book on what it takes to produce good animation (more specifically, his senior animators did), and guess who the early anime producers were inspired by?

But it all boils down to the fact that there are enough older men in Japan who are totally keen on reading a manga about baseball, whereas in America they'd rather just go watch an actual baseball game, so your choice is between capeshit and arthouse grind "graphic novels". Admittedly, Westerners are gradually coming around, but it will probably be several more generations before you start seeing the niche markets like they have in Japan

They're not adult literature or "classic" like Shakespare or Cervantes are classics".

I used to wonder this. Later I found out there is a trove out there of less discussed stuff. In the 90s there seems to have been a genuine attempt to try out an adult comics industry spearheaded by the porn mags like Hustler. I guess it didn't go anywhere because eventually the feed stops to a trickle.

I think it shows the major issue with western porn doujinshi: IP laws and distribution. The ability is there, but it needs patronship of corporations that want pornographic comics in the West.

There is no equivalent of a manga circle of semi-amateurs selling their stuff at Comiket for the west.

There's much more inequality of art skills in the west. Either you have pros or deviant art.

There's less of a culture and industry of obscure genres in comics in the West. Even "arty" comic houses like Vertigo struggle and are still pretty corporate. There is no tradition of assembled comics magazines in the west like there is in Japan (no coincidence I think that Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant is the closest western option for semi-pornographic stuff).

The west is much more phobic of sex and therefore you're never going to see Convent of Hell or Borgia (2005) on sale at wallmart of your local gamestore.

In short, if there weren't so many barriers to entry and a stronger amateur art tradition in the West it would probably happen. Also be warned, some western porn comics get really fucked up. I always thought the Japanese were unique weird and perverted, but some of the shit they saw fit to draw during this period - God damn.

So do most movies, most songs, most books, and most of everything. Japanese cartoons have a higher amount of content, a greater diversity in that content, and higher average quality, compared to American cartoons. This is a fact.
Just because some American cartoons are good and I loved watching a lot of them as a kid and wouldn't mind seeing them again, doesn't mean I can't recognize the differences in the art form in the two countries.
Japs respect animation more as a regular medium for stories, including shitty and good ones, while it's mostly a gimmick in the US for children's shows or edgy comedy.

Most American animation panders exclusively to children which means silly designs are more important than aesthetically pleasing ones. American cartoons these days are largely influenced by 90's shows which were not exactly beautiful and cute in terms of character design. There are definitely less ugly cartoons now thanks to the rise of the so called Cal arts style but the influence of ugly=funny that older shows left still has some life.
Japan on the other hand bases new anime aesthetics on old ones. This way anything anime is pretty visually distinct from anything else, while also having quite a bit of variation within, something the recent Cal arts trend prevents in the US.
Anyway, what happened is that anime was heavily inspired by hand drawn/2d Disney films and that influence on character design is still there. Because they weren't so focused on being funny they could do a lot more with that look. L

Anime takes a lot of shortcuts with animation as well, and aesthetic character design alone doesn't make a show look good, just look at Berserk 2016 for evidence of that.
Big mouth is an unfair representative of American animation, it's literally fucking garbage that nobody likes. A show like star vs the forces of evil is much better suited to explore what's going on with animation and the usa. That "bean face" design that we see slight variations of in essentially every single popular American show is comparable to the generic anime face. In some cases you get a show like k-on where every girl has literally the exact same face, impossible to tell apart if not for their hair. No American show has that problem.
All that being said I agree that Japan is easily the king of animation these days but to really see just how far beyond they are you should look at films instead of shows. Yes there are studios like kyo Ani, madhouse, trigger etc that produce top notch animation but even they can't compete with the animation quality of anime films.
Most American films are still trying to copy pixar but none of the studios, including modern pixar, really understand that pixar didn't make our jaws drop by dangling sad things in front of you until you cried. They did it by, yes doing that, but mostly by not looking like a gross janky mess while doing it. American films perfectly show how boring and lifeless animation here has become. But if you look through even just the last three years you can find plenty of examples of pure excellence in animation coming out of Japan

Nobody can deny that cynical laziness can be found all over anime. But it's absolutely laughable to think it's not 1000 times worse in the west. What is aesthetically pleasing is subjective, but to not see the clear differences in effort and attempts to stand out is to be blind.
Let's compare two of the most popular shows last year from both countries. Violet Evergarden vs paw patrol. What both of these shows look like and who they appeal to are crystal clear reflections of the industry and animation culture that produced them. Both have their fair share of shortcuts and simplified designs, but I don't think paw patrol will be showing up on anyones top ten list.
Japan is the king of animation now, but it will change soon. In the coming decade the international anime market will grow beyond the Japanese market and more Western studios will move that way. Avatar the last Airbender and teen Titans already proved that this can work if you put in the effort, and the castelvania show is a great example from just last year. Japan has done a brilliant job holding the torch but it's about time we had another American golden age of animation

the ultimate problem with Walt Disney trying to "make more mature stories" is that he kind of lacked a lot of the "guts" that it would've required to properly do it.

Japanese animation developed under much lower budgets than american animation, so they already had tons of tricks that let them do good animation on a budget by the time they transitioned to TV.

America, meanwhile, was so dependent on massive budgets and flowy, detailed animation that the industry was unable to make the transition to television and basically had to reteach itself how to animate from square one, giving japan a huge head start

the problem with Canadian animation isn't so much the art-style as it is the shows writing, directing, and overall animation quality.

Having a "flat-style" is perfectly fine and isn't necessarily restrictive in terms of the stories you're able to tell..

the issue is more or less "actually telling compelling/interesting stories".

Western animation seems always stuck with either a lack of budget or a lack of motivation to do anything really "out there" interestesting aside from perhaps higher-budget films or a one-off arthouse work

For the longest time, Hollywood and American animation have had a monopoly marketshare on the media most the world consumes, especially in the West and, America the most. So for a while costs were cut to make the most money, but most significantly the executives and producers had a lot more sway in the animation, to the detriment of it, which continues even today
In Japan, its the case where the artist and animator has virtual free reign of their work, and the higher executives merely judge whether to chop it or not based off of its BD and merch sales, and not the content inofitself

Everything is poorly drawn or wannabe anime. The west in general has essentially thrown in the towel when it comes to drawing with appeal. Fundamentals are apparently not taught in art schools and everything has to represent some political undertone instead of just looking appealing to be appealing.

anime is forever cursed to be unoriginal and stale because of the rampant homogenization of art styles and storytelling, now everything is about a moeblob or bland male on a school setting with a slice-of-life theme, if it's not that then it's an action cartoon that repeats the same tropes of every action cartoon before it.

eventually all animes will blend into one another and you'll be hard pressed to find one that is actually entertaining or original, but why watch anime when you can just reed the manga it's based on, right? you're not supporting the writers or the publisher by torrenting anime or reading manga scans, anyway.

I find it fascinating how weebs claim that anime is better than cartoons yet they don't support the media they consume, they're just pretend-fighting on forums and image boards. I wonder if they know that Japan as a whole doesn't care about any fan outside of their own island because they can't sell overpriced blu-rays that have 2 episodes of the 13 episode series they're trying to push to the disgusting fanbase of shut-ins that will eventually destroy their island's birthrate because none of them want to reproduce or become paper-pushers, they'd rather idolize some generic anime girl that belongs in another generic SoL/isekai/shonen/etc series that in the end, it's nothing special because it's just one of many other generic animes...

Made in Abyss, along with Goblin Slayer, are 2010 baby's first shock value anime. Haven't watched the animes, but I've been reading the MiA manga and I'd highly recommend it if you haven't read or watched it, the world building is amazing and the story is really interesting but be wary as it includes ocassional lolicon nudity and gore. If you've ever played Etrian Odyssey, it will be right up your alley.

Have you ever read it? It has some really good worldbuilding based around the abyss, the white whistles and the narehates. Be aware that these two kids are going so deep because of Reg's expandable arms, Nanachi's ability to see the abyss' "mantle" and their prior training with another white whistle. And still is not like they go unharmed, with Riko almost losing her arm after getting fataly poisoned, for example.

The American Animation Industry never had a person willing to create fucked up works of the medium in order to keep it from being pigeonholed into a children's media.

Osamu Tezuka saw that the industry was beginning to cater exclusively to children and created works like his adaptation of 1001 nights and the MW manga while fostering similar mindsets in his fellows.

The closest thing the American Animation industry had to Tezuka was Disney, who despite claiming that the sole focus of marketing animation towards children would kill the industry didn't have the stones to produce the Adult works necessary to counter said focus, while the Comics industry had potential until a bunch of pearl clutchers fostered a hysteria over comics not being "wholesome" and fucked any potential comics had as a medium right up the ass with the comics code in a way that it could never really recover from.

Nowadays the cultural narrative has been fucking animation for so long any attempt to subvert the "Lol animation=children's entertainment 100% of the time" meme is either ignored or is so bogged down by having to be at least in some part a comedy (finding an "Adult" western animated show that isn't also a comedy is like finding a grain of salt in a fucking desert) which despite having more adult elements end up coming off as even more childish than several animations that are just out and out for kids.

the only hope is to burn our entertainment industry to the ground along with all the biases tied to it and start from scratch, which will never happen in any of our lifetimes

Cartoons is for children. There's a lot of crappy anime but there's a few masterpieces that's worth watching. Anime is made for all ages and for all kinds of demographics. Disney could never compete with anime because he only made cartoons for children. Pixar isn't any different. Whenever I meet any adult and they say they watch Disney/Pixar I just think of them as children. I just can't take them seriously. Right now anime is in a bad place though. The creative juices in America artists have worn out over the years. Not to mention they prefer overly realistic and detailed characters over simple and cutesy designs like animal. Japan still has this corporate culture of overwork, and while it's horrible and leads to a lot of suicide, it produces some damn fine animation.

All the people ITT saying that Western animation shits on Japanese clearly don't watch anime and are coming from a place of horrible bias. Objectively, it's not even close. Your average throwaway seasonal cute girl anime completely BTFOs the likes of Gravity Falls, Adventure Time and especially Steven Universe in pretty much every respect conceivable. And that's not even talking about the good studios like, say, Madhouse, Trigger, KyoAni etc.

Like I REALLY want cartoons to be great again, but right now in 2019, American TV cartoons are in a really horrible, lazy place. You have to dig up big-budget shorts from like at least 50 years ago to really find something comparable to modern anime.

But I can give the West credit for being so much better than at 3D animation than the East. So there's that. SpiderVerse was fantastic.

Casca's character arc in Berserk is a lot more graphic, but no one gives a shit because no one but us autists in this Brazilian Waxing Cork Board care about it anymore.

Big names in the industry have proportionally fragile egos (specially execs), and because everyone has to kiss up to them to keep/get good jobs. Most western artists these days also think that effort=quality, so, when someone calls a work that they or someone they could work for spent years making everyone gets collectively assblasted about it. Some have admitted to the use of balcklists, were people are wrote down as unemployable because of something controversial they said on twitter a decade ago or expressing the wrong opinion about a cartoon or movie once.
The other factor is profit, low quality=low costs and if the people eat it up there's no reason to spend an extra penny for something better.

Eh, this is really tentative. For instance, it's not like Japan produces any media that are actually more respectable, i.e. Japanese live action shows are uniformly horribly acted and so many of them are based on manga (that is, if they are not one of the hundreds of random variety shows that just seem to exist).

The thing is, at some point, a tons of weebs have tried to go to Japan and treated it as some kind of fantasy anime wonderland, then are disappointed when normal people over there actually aren't so gregarious to people who are openly otaku. So this seems to have resulted in the impression in the west that anime and such are actually outright hated over there. The things is though, manga/anime/idol/vidya 'culture' seems to have this enormous permeation throughout society. Not in the sense that everyone just loves it and brings it up all the time as a subject, but it's just something people *do*, and a huge percentage of pop culture there relates to these things somehow.

If you read the post, it's because the poster claims it was so good it ruined other anime for him.

/a/ will generally be biased in favor of it, because
(1) it triggers the anti-lolicon/shoticon crowd, which they blame for certain /a/ rule/culture changes like the banning of loli/shota threads (in reality hiro had a part in it as well)
(2) it triggered a bunch of youtube anime reviewers, which they hate with a passion
(3) in spite of this it's still fairly popular, winning anime of the year for both the east (2ch) and the west (CR awards, Reddit AOTY polls, MAL ratings). To /a/, it's a testament that the triggered groups don't have as much influence/representation as they claim to have.

I'm not saying it's not good (it's definitely worth a watch), but basically certain biases will cause some people to suck its dick and other people to condemn it.

That's sort of true, but still somewhat exaggerated. For instance, the amount of manga marketed specifically at housewives, as a demographic, is relatively tiny, though a given woman might enjoy reading a certain amount of manga from various demos regardless if she happens to be interested in them, but it's probably unlikely that a random group of housewives are going to be frequently bringing up manga that they might be reading without some embarrassment.

Yes it is. The west is far more hostile to things that are tied up with 2D animation being a 'normal' part of their culture to the extent they are in Japan. Disney specifically, in its modern form, it comparable though, as it encompasses Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar etc. along with the traditional fairytales it associates its major copyright properties with. These are things that any given person might decide to go see, but at the same time, a random adult who constantly talked about these specific subjects would be seen as somewhat quirky at least.
