Oh absolutely. Worldbuilding is vital to getting the reader invested in the story. Sure, the characters come first, but the setting needs to be interesting enough for the overall plot to actually matter.

The best way to do it, in my opinion, is to take a bit of time to visually demonstrate an element. Hyperdrive or magic, for example. You gotta show your protagonist firing up the ship for the jump, or preparing their spells.

right? there's a lot of info on that one page, but because previous pages haven't been clogged, it's not tedious, and it's just allusive enough. Also, the little panels opening up to the larger final panel is good visual pacing.

Hey, Tex. Let me run a Metroid idea past you.

Instead of each ability having a predetermined location, you instead find items that let you choose which ability you get. For example, you find an upgrade point, and you select the Space Jump. Now you go find a place that requires you to jump really high, and there's another upgrade point there. The key of course is to design the map so that every option is viable.

Everyone likes to say Metroid is non-linear, but that there's a sequence to break in the first place makes that utter bullshit.

While my first instinct is to say reeee muh metroid, I'd be interested in experimentation, since I kind of expect Metroid to be the frontrunner of the genre and it's kind of not right now.

Your idea sounds pretty close to what Link Between Worlds did, and I think it'd have the same drawback in that areas have to be designed with the minimum requirements in mind. It could absolutely be done with way more complexity than that, but you'd need some kind of hyper autism to be able to design such a huge map that it manages to be completely open ended, but if some hyper autist managed to pull that off, it'd be a work of genius.

Not necessarily. It would likely just require a looser design with multiple paths being viable for an objective. Say there's a door on top of a cliff, and to get to it, you can either jump up to it with the Space Jump, or use the Spider Ball to climb up. Dirt simple example, but you get the idea.

And therein lies problem with this idea, and where Tex has a point about the map designer needing to be some sort of savant to make it work. Only ideas I got are that morph ball, missiles, and charge beam are default due to how fundamental they are.
