MGM beat them to making the “definitive” version. They’ve done Oz and Oz-like stuff since but it’s never worked out.

Most of the rest of your list is because they just usually don’t do horror. Their brand from the start has revolved around being wholesome and family friendly, and they sometimes try to branch from that, but again, it’s not their main thing. And like with Wizard of Oz, Dracula and Frankenstein also already have “definitive” film versions with Universal.

Disney purchased rights to the canon OZ sequel material, and produced Return to Oz in 1985. By doing so, they've prevented other companies from making it.

It's just that people are plebs and whenever somebody tries to give them something that goes beyond what they knew from the movie/first book they go 'not muh Oz'.

Amazingly, pic related (canceled by Warner yesterday, but only after two full seasons) starts with some elements from the movie, but is LOADED with lore from the later books, going on past Baum to Ruth Thompson.
Prof Wogglebug, Sir Hokus of Pokes, Scraps the Patchwork Girl, even Ojo the Unlucky are in there.

In the comics they've done the first two a couple of times with the Mickey and Donald groups of characters (I haven't read all the versions, but Goofy Frankenstein was published in the 1990s and was funny AF).

They've never done Paradise Lost but there is an amazing Mickey version of Dante's Inferno, see pic related and also here:

realtalk though, what does that have to do with anything? It's a completely different work than shadow over innsmouth. And even if it wasn't it still shouldn't have any bearing on whether or not to make a movie out of it... after all, disney made Tarzan even though literally IN THAT BOOK tarzan killed tons of blacks just for existing...

Decidedly not the case though
Excerpt from Tarzan of the Apes:

What? They bought the rights but they lost it after Return to Oz was a bust, so it shouldn't matter. Return to Oz is a mash-up of ideas from Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, at any rate.

ALL the Baum books went Public Domain after that but too many people are fixated on the first book. There's nothing stopping people from using Jack Pumpkinhead or Tik-Tok, as long as you stick with what the book designs look like or do some design other people haven't done.

It works fine for dumb little tv movies on Cartoon Network and shit like Halloween specials, but not for feature length studio movies.

Universal Monsters being so iconic is not much of an obstacle. Hotel Transylvania has 3 movies and a TV series, so in theory Disney could do a horror-comedy if they wanted (though I think in this case they don't want to compete with Sony in that).

In Tarzan's defense, he had never been around black people who weren't the Tribesmen that killed Kala.

Disney did a good job of bastardizing the story though. They turned Tarzan's ultimate choice of not revealing his identity into some cookie-cutter bullshit climax where he doesn't prove he's the better man, but instead Clayton just slips and hangs himself like a retard.

We either get awful adaptations with annoying pop music that people eat up, or movies that treat the source material well like John Carter and it under-performs.

There were actually a couple of pretty popular Hunchback of Notre Dame movies that were generally pretty well known before Disney did theirs, which Hollywood types at the time would have been familiar with. They were generally less kid oriented and darker than Disney’s of course, but they also share similarities with the Disney movie that they don’t with the books, and almost certainly had some influence.

You don’t have to defend Tarzan. Burroughs knew what he was doing and made Tarzan intentionally as racist as possible, partly as a joke about pulp tropes, but continued to roll with it once the character became insanely popular. You can make up in-universe excuses if you really want, but it’s not necessary because it’s not like the author wrote it that way by accident.

No, Burroughs was a smart man and wrote Tarzan the way he would realistically act against black people in the situation he was placed in. All he knows is that the Tribesmen were jackoffs like Numa and Kerchak, and that there's other people that look just like them around the world. He wasn't raised like a human being to understand racial issues and a crash course on human economics wasn't going to immediately change his mind.

There's obvious projection in areas where he portrays them in a less-than-flattering light, but he went out of his way in later books to not let that reflect on the character Tarzan.

The director was a dipshit who refused to listen to the marketing team every single step of the way. Read up on it, it's an interesting anecdote how by just making a few slight tweeks here and there, someone managed to flush $300 million and potentially more good screenwriting in the future down the toilet.

When the Fox deal is done they will also have the distribution rights for future Dragon Ball movies, so it can be cheaper for them to develop a live action, but it is highly unlikely.

I don't know why they haven't done a JttW movie yet, a well designed Monkey King would sell tons of merchandise.
