Amber is probably one of the most broken characters I have ever seen, caused by the abuse she suffered from her father, and a incredibly low self steem. When Sal first robbed the store and hold her and Ethan hostage, and then she snapped and stab her, it was because she could keep accepting herself as weak, although I dont think she was as much stabbing Sal (she did stabbed her) but psychologically, was stabbing her own weakness. And Im thinking that this is when the Amazi Girl persona appeared. After that, the only way that she has learned to deal with her own emotional is by punching it.
Sal on the other hand, her issues are more that her mother was emotionally abusive towards her, although in a way that wasnt as obvious as other cases. It starts with the parents very blatant favoritism of Walky. In family units, the parents having a favorite, and it being obvious can be hurtful to the other siblings. Now imagine having favorites between twins, two persons that have lived together literally since birth. The effects are worse. Then there is the fact that the parents in general didnt payed attention to Sal, or if they did, it was in the worst way possible, like when Sal mother found out that Sal was saiving money for her friend surgery (which could have let her speak again), and instead of congratulating her for being such a good friend, she steals the money, saying that its for your own good. Such event then made Sal start doing more criminal activities to raise the money faster, which ended in her trying to rob a store.
Both have issues, but I think Sal, so far, is the one that has dealt better with them, accepting her fault in her own shitty life, while trying to make amends for the evil she did in the past. She remembers being stabbed, but that part is not as important to her life as the abuse she suffered from her mother.
