I use a mix of ground turkey and ground beef and I sautéed the onions AND then use the canned diced and sauced tomatoes to get the flavor as the other anons said.
And I also use curry powder and other chili (you can use whatever bottle chili or even sirachha (sp?) or whatever else like that you already have around versus buying chili powder, but I always have curry around so I use that as well.
You can use Beef broth but it's unnecessary. It's not going to hurt, but definitely don't get the canned kind, it has a lot of fat and a lot of salt.
