Just finished it.
Damn it's actually good. If it didn't look like it was reproducing at 10 fps it would be even better, but the world building is fantastic, Avatar tier I would say, even.

I couldn't get past episode three. The animation style was just so, so bad. I saw one of the animators defend it on Twitter, saying it's ACTUALLY good because it's more like stop-motion, or something. But it looks really, really bad to me, so what's the difference?

Thing is, I really dig this style, and the action scenes where quite good. But I honestly thought my connection was spotty due to the "lagginess" of quieter scenes and yeah, it kind of hurt my eyes to look at.

Apparently it's not because of budget reasons, either, so I'm really curious why they thought it would work.

I enjoyed it for the nice characters and general fantasy feel, though I thought it fell a bit short in certain regards. For a travelogue type of fantasy tale, it lacks the sense of place and distance that I usually like in those kind of stories. There was no satisfying feeling that they've come a long way, or how much they've traveled in the first place. Also, it's all about the landmarks in a fantasy story about a traveling party. Places that instill wonder or convey how the world opens up to the characters. Instead of hitting a city with it's own identity and sense of grandeur or history, they visit a nondescript medieval village in the penultimate episode. Same for the mountain they climb. To draw a comparison, compare that to WoT where they hit Shaddar Logoth for the first time, or the capital with the festival going on. There's a sense of wonder that makes you eager to explore the world alongside the characters. Hell, Bree in LotR had more character. You'd think they'd put a bit more effort in making the world seem exciting in the very first season that needs to draw in people and whose success decides whether there'll be more episodes or not.

Damn it all. I was just about to post a few larger posts that went really in depth on the animation of the show. Its strengths, its weaknesses. And I had examples and comparisons to other shows. And went into the technicalities behind the animations and the purpose and intentions behind choosing one over the other. With examples for both to highlight the difference.

But then. As I was finishing the third and last post among these. My browser crashed. All of it gone. And I don't even have the time to write it all again since I am actually kind of busy as much as I wish I wasn't.
Anyhow. With no offence. I am pretty sure you misunderstood this animator. I will say that there are plenty of flaws with the animation of the show, some of which can be extremely jarring. I absolutely understand why you'd feel it'd be jarring and or uncomfortable or unpleasant. Even to the point where you wouldn't be able to stomach it. I am with you on that.
But it still sounds to me like you really misunderstood the animator.

I might be able to go more in depth on it later for a second attempt on the off chance that anyone else actually care. But yeah.

This is how the characters see and understand the world, but not necessarily the truth.
They even race code the speaker in a blink you'll miss it moment. It does't the opposite of what you are saying it does, it sets up expectations to how characters see their own world, and as the story goes along they realize they might not know as much as they think they do.

I like and understand the idea behind this style of animation but it was obviously not done as well as it could have been. It still needs work at the conceptual level.

However, I want to see what they can do about it. They have seen the criticism and responded to it already.
Also the show itself is good. I love the characters and their dynamics. The story itself is also full of potential, as is the world they are building.

Granted, by that shot of the pink tracking spell bridging the mountains and that was the one noteworthy shot in that regard in the entire first season. There should have been more though, in terms of selling the world to the audience. Regardless, I'll get over whether they cater to that fancy of mine, but I think they let slide a major means of making the audience care about that particular setting, which in turn would have heightened the chances of more seasons. Discovery of the world is a major tent pole of every fantasy story and while I think the magical lands that they're trying to reach may be a lot more interesting, it won't help them much if the show doesn't get renewed after that first season.

It basically converts video to 60fps. It's still not perfect, because the framerate is so low the program doesn't have much to work with, but it makes it more bearable.

DP is good, but the problem is that it doesn't have: 1) a compelling main bad guy who is a threat that instills fear in main protagonists (like what Ozai was for 3 seasons) and they don't know if they can stop him. Viren is ok, but he's a different kind of villain, he's all about politics and he knows failure and often he's not even in main protagonists' part of an equation, I think they forgot about by end of the season. My fanfic idea: dragon is the bad guy who purposefully plots to have humans and elves kill each other and he was the one who originally taught humans dark magic. I dunno why yet, but I just think it'd be kind of cool if when main protagonists return Zym to the Dragon he actually wants his son dead and Viren actually saved the egg when he found it.

And second thing, well, while the show is good throughout and I'd say I probably enjoy it as much as I enjoyed first season of Atla, it doesn't really have GREAT episodes. Like, you know the Storm, or Blue Spirit. Just episodes that add as much to overarching plot and characters, as it is strong and fun on its own merits. It definitely has some neat ideas in there with Rayla swearing to kill Ezran and whatnot, but it doesn't exactly go deep with that stuff and I never really felt like the team really bonded yet. Rayla and Callum also totally have same type of Sokka-esque humor (like almost entire cast of this show really) so it makes no sense when she scoffs at his jokes, if anything, I think it'd be cuter if they were oddballs who enjoy their own dumb humor and were actually annoying to Ezran, the kid of the group.

The animation stopped being a problem to me halfway through episode 1, animators are comfortable with it and use dynamic angles for various action scenes, the movements are fluid (in a sense that the way the movey doesn't feel rigid, the FPS count is still criminally low at times) and the expressions characters make are priceless. Suffers from a bit of ghost town syndrome though.

You could have them try to kill Ozy and the gang just to try and keep the war going, or something.

The story needs assholes on both sides or its not going to really work. If the elves are all good guys but angry, its going to be way too lopsided and the story won't work.

Season 1 felt more like the first half of a first season, rather than an entire season.
It's a problem a lot of Netflix shows have -- with a lack of time constraints and a more forgiving schedule they tend to be a lot slower paced than normal TV shows.
In addition they're able to have a strictly continuous plotline instead of a plotline that you can jump into anywhere in a single season.
This leads to a plot constantly moving forward instead of episodic traveling that avatar was known for.

Same problem as Castlevania, a lot of people were left pre-cum with just 4 episodes.

It's weird how with Marvel shows Netflix can't get it right constraining them almost exclusively to 13 episodes of episodes they don't have stories for against cartoons who have great stories they simply can't tell in the span of episodes they were allowed to.

Netflix is either too much or not enough, DP and Marvel shows should have reversed episodes count.

The flaws you've without a doubt have noticed are very much real. And I understand why you'd find the animation awkward and or unpleasant or uncomfortable. Even to the point where you might not be able to stomach it.
I can't help but think you've misunderstood the animator. I can't possibly imagine the animator actually implying that it being choppy like stop-motion means it is good, or anything like that. Rather this is really all a discussion of key frames and limited versus full animation.

With few frames the animation will naturally come across as choppy. As opposed to a smoother animation with many more frames.
So why would you ever opt for limited animation? For one it's typically cheaper. With fewer frames to animate it's typically less work. But leaving it at that would be disingenuous since there is a lot more to it than that. And even highly budgeted productions have chosen to go for limited animation for great effect, allowing them to invest a lot more time and effort into each individual frame of the animation, among other things.

So why limited animation? What are the end product advantages?
With a limited number of frames each individual frame stands out more. But that also means that each individual keyframe stands out more as well. Keyframes being very deliberate and intentional frames of animation that all the other frames are built around. And these frames are very effective at leaving a striking impression and matters a lot in terms of how an audience interprets or takes in an animation.
With full animation you might get a smoother whole but the keyframes will also be drowned under the countless of other frames. Audiences are very likely to fail to pick up on them and some might even miss them entirely. And this has actually typically been an issue with 3d animation in general.

Anyhow. Here is short comparison from Guilty Gear Xrd's GDC panel doing a short little comparison.

If you have any interest in animation and or 3d modelling in general, I'd actually highly suggest watching the whole thing. Applying limited animation to 3d animation, while not unique, have been and is kind of rare. Which is part of the reason for why this GG GDC panel even exists at all. And if you compare the animations in this example you can actually see how the power conveyed is actually greater in the limited animation, as are each distinct key pose, giving a certain clarity to the character being animated that is missing from the admittedly much smoother full animation.

And this is highly relevant to discussing the animation of The Dragon Prince. The animation of TDP is without a doubt flawed, but it is by no means without strengths.
Keyframes and keyposes are things I'd argue the show actually does really well, in addition to believable and elaborate character animations and emotes. Even if you find the animation as is too much to stomach, these things being handled really well is likely why you don't find it 10x worse than you do. I'd argue it is actually worthy of praise because the animation is legitimately impressive here.
Now if I wasn't stuck in a hotel room and if I had access to my other computer, this would most likely be where I'd throw around my material from the Green Lantern animated show. Since that show, I'd claim, is kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum in comparison to TDP in terms of the animation.
Now I'd just like to point out that by large I am actually generally impressed with the animation of GLTAS and that I am ultimately weirdly fond of the show. So I wouldn't have this come across as me shitting on its either the animation or the show itself.

But the animation of GLTAS while very smooth, does without a doubt have an issue with both keyframes and keyposing ans also comes across as generally floaty. The floatiness of GLTAS's animation happily suits its setting and environments surprisingly well however, intended or not, but that's kind of aside the point.
Though in short full animation lacks both the highs and the lows of limited animation. For better or worse.

Anyhow since I don't have GLTAS on hand I'll instead link this autistic 30 year old that rants about TDP's animation while going in depth and drawing comparisons to other shows.

He is rather harsh in his critique and he kind of talks in circles a little bit, but he is very thorough and I'd argue that he does a good job at highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses of the animation. Once again, if you're interested in animation and or is simply really interested in TDP, it might be worth giving his whole rambling a chance.
Anyhow personally I'd just wish they'd employ more variable framerates. Not drop their limited animation style because largely speaking I'd actually say it works for the show and I am actually generally impressed with it. But I would no question love it if they made regular exceptions to the rule and on occasion broke the framerate as needed for scenes that calls for it. This is above all what I'd personally wager the show would need to achieve the most drastic jump up of quality.

And yes the show's lack of smear frames and in-betweens in general is intriguing. As the above analysis points out. And on that topic I'd say that employing smear frames and in-betweens to this animation would most likely make it look absolutely amazing and I figure that all the talks about the show's uncanniness or choppiness would die instantly with that. Though sadly I can't really imagine it being much in the realm of possibility at all.

I don't think it's world building was anything to be wowed at, but it's but terrible. They hit the necessary points to establish the context and setting, and hint at greater aspects through background iconography, the tools used by both men and elves and how they use it, the perspectives of the cast, etc. It's a subtle kind of world building that doesn't have much exposition or impressive setpieces, but it gets the message across. I expect they'll delivery deeper into it once they reach unfamiliar cultures in Xadia.

Adding a whole additional layer onto the production like that would probably be ridiculously expensive and time intensive. And for an animated TV (it's Netflix I know) series in particular I just can't imagine it being feasible to be honest, sadly. Perhaps if it was a shorter feature film or something then it could have been truly impressive.
But as is I still think smart use of variable and shifting framerates depending on the scenes in question would do the show really well. And would probably already move past most of the more apparent flaws of the animation as is anyway. So that is without a doubt I'd like to see employed regularly for the future of the show at the very least. But we'll see.

But yeah. To get back on point. The comparison to stop-motion is still very apt. Stop-motion animation by nature of its very craft relies incredibly much on its keyframes and very deliberate posing. Traditional 2d animation often opts for limited animation, but limited animation is never quite highlighted as much anywhere else but in stop-motion. (I am sure there has been some madman somewhere out in the world that has made some stop-motion animation with some absolutely insane and ridiculous number of frames for the most smooth stop-motion animation in the world just because. But generally speaking stop-motion relies heavily on the art of limited animation.) And if you want to evolve as an animator the study of stop-motion could probably help a lot.

Well. These posts were poorly structured. Even more so now on the second draft. And probably not even that informative either. In this second draft I wasn't even able to fit it all in 3 posts. And yet I feel like I've said less. But in case someone fancied to get through this wall of text, hope it was enlightening in at least some fashion.
I do wish I was at my other computer and had the time to make distinct video comparisons on my own though. Comparing the animations side by side.

The animation's a bit wonky, and I think the setting and conflict need more episodes before I can really judge them, but I genuinely enjoy the main characters and their dynamic. Which is probably the most important thing in a series like this.

Yeah, Medieval setting with Elves vs. Humans with vague magical abilities isn't a groundbreaking setting, but I think it gets the job done to set up the initial conflict and keep the focus on establishing the main characters. Hopefully they go a bit more into detail with things as the story progresses and they see a bit more of the world and learn more about magic.

I agree. Just with the way the story is presented, DP really WANTS to be atla, but just manages to pull of Legend of Korra so far. But go back and watch season 1 again. The show didn't really find its footing until a bit later into the show. I hope they do the same here. On the other hand, though, Netflix does have a tendency to fuck up shows in season 2.

I don't get why people are confused about this, they give us constant details on it. Callum is never pointed out as magically gifted and shoots lightning just by holding an orb and doing the motions. Claudia explains what the orb is and demonstrates how casting is supposed to work, Rayla outright tells us you can cast without the orb it you're near the right element, and the ep1 intro lists off the elements for us. There's no reason to think you need an innate gift to do anything; they tell us that much when they point out humans have no natural affinities. Elves/dragons have the affinities, and we see how that works through the assassins and illusionist

I like what we have so far of TDP WAY better than I ever liked TLOK, even when it was brand new and I was still in the honeymoon period. Its storytelling priorities seem a lot better, the writing, how they develop character relationships... really the only thing TLOK has over it is worldbuilding, and it was standing on ATLA's shoulders for that one.

Why do people shit on the world building? That's a first to me. Haven't really seen people critique it before.
Personally I am pretty sure that I actually very much prefer the world of the dragon prince over that of avatar. And even if the established world and its world building are not the same thing, hasn't the show been very good at establishing the former without the latter intervening or getting in the way of the rest of the show? Wouldn't you say that makes for rather good world building?

I am not sure if avatar is the first comparison I would actually go for. But compared to it I'd really say that The Dragon Prince, even with limited episodes appear to be much better at establishing its own macrocosm.
The journey of Avatar, as much as I like the show, feels much more like a journey of largely disconnected microcosms. Detailed and interesting microcosms, but microcosms nonetheless. The only real exception I feel like would be the Fire Nation. Which I'd argue actually felt largely fleshed out as a whole, not only in regards to itself but also how the Fire Nation related to the other nations of the world. Because I never really got much of any of that from the rest of the show. The rest was more like I put it, a journey through microcosms.

The Dragon Prince feels like it is much more apt in establishing the larger motions of its world and the detailed variations and deviations to said motions.
Right off the bat the show very swiftly simply lists most of the major factions of the world without going in depth or really introducing any of them. But then immediately proceeds to drive home how there is both political and personal discord within these factions, in how it focuses on a couple of them.

We learn quickly of how the human kingdoms are not some unified whole. And we also learn that Katolis isn't either with Harrow and Viren being of different thoughts. Then later Amaya plays into this and even the little we see of the priests and their traditions.
We learn that the moonshadow elves are honourbound and how deep seated their hatred/contempt is. But even from this little group we see exceptions that makes for grander implications. Implications that are later further elaborated upon with Rayla's talks about elves and then also her own family.

The show quickly establishes the frames of the world. And basic relations between the pieces. And then develops these pieces alongside each other in ways that complements the other pieces.

I also can't help but be intrigued by the similarities between the primal sources and the mysticism of our world's astrology.
Avatar kind of had different kinds of oriental mysticism tied into its show. But I could never help but feel like it was ultimately largely separate from the idea of bending itself. Like you don't need to live like or adhere to air nomad ideology at all for as long as you understand the workings of air bending.
And well. The Legend of Korra kind of dropped most of the mysticism regardless. And now the mess of that show is its whole own discussion, but the fact that it could separate the two so easily still kind of hints at how loosely connected it was to begin with.
The primal sources I would say comes across as much more inherently mystical. Whereas bending simply feels more like a law of nature that everyone familiar with it just grows used to with time.

And I think I am kind of intrigued of this aspect of the primal sources and The Dragon Prince's established magic. It kind of permeates how they speak of magic in the show. It establishes ideas and rules but doesn't spoil it by establishing too much.

I did see season two. It didn't fuck up an interesting premise, it fulfilled an insane premise in the most inane, uninspired way possible. Season 2 was terrible. When I saw the begining of season 3, I was hopeful. Then that hope was crushed with unlikable characters, a meandering plotline, and the season dropping plot points like they were going out of style. Season 4 doubled down on ALL of that. Season 4 was everything that was bad about season 3 with nothing that was good about it. But season 3 was still a disappointing, meandering mess.

It's not that Callum is gifted in magic, it's that when it comes to rune sigals, incantations and all the stuff needed to cast magic, it requirs the precise motions and the precise words.

Now we have Callum who has a gifted memory (as shown with his drawings and the fact he can copy runes and words from hearing/seeing them ONCE).

Rayla and Claudia appear to be very different types of characters. And I am not even that sure how much that description even fits Rayla. Honestly. Dark magic in TDP doesn't seem inherently any worse than humans raising livestock for food in real life. Yeah the cow gets slaughtered, but most people are fine with it provided the thing is still raised and killed humanely.

Which makes me wonder if humans have or had farms of magical livestock that they raised explicitly to fuel their magic. There's probably a way to make it sustainable, just like mundane livestock used for meat and other animal products.

I will say this though. Viren absorbing Runaan and putting him in his coin, looked eerily like Viren pulling Runaan's soul out of his body. Just saying.

We've only see the human's side of the land, so I don't know how you can compare. So far we've only had the word of what appears to be a biased narrator tell the tale of what happened. Plus, humans aren't inherently magical, like elves or dragons are. Could be the magic simply goes where the source is the strongest. Plus I don't see how the land could possibly be so nearly depleted with as few of dark magic users as we've seen. So far we've only encountered about two humans using dark magic, and they don't seem to consume a terrible amount of creatures.

What even gave you that impression?
If anything I'd say that one of Viren's biggest motivations for reclaiming the land of Xadia, appears to be claim its magic.
And all of his magical creatures are also appear to be harvested from Xadia. And he is frustrated at how he can't claim more than the feeble quantities that he is able to.

I honestly got the impression that he is very desperate for magical creatures. And I can't deny that I am kind of confused as to how one could get the complete opposite impression.
I mean remember. The magical macguffin of the show itself. The dragon prince/egg. Is exactly that. A magical creature that Viren&Co desperately seek for the use of dark magic.

I dunno, barring an anime or two, I haven't seen a show since ATLA that made me feel the way TDP does. While I was into VLD for a while, I don't think it's even remotely in the same tier as even just these first 9 episodes. VLD was fun enough, but most of my investment into it was in the hope that it would improve, which it mostly didn't. If TDP's writing remains the exact same quality that it is in season 1, I'll still think it's pretty damn good(though I wouldn't MIND if they cleaned up a few of the plot holes and stuff)

I don't know. I get the same vibe from this show I got from Avatar. People tend to forget that the first episode of The Last Airbender was very... strange. I remember when I first watched it, I thought it was like a parody of anime or something. I couldn't tell what type of tone it was going for, and the entire first season was like that. I think the writers are genuinely better than the Legend of Korra writers who then went on to do the Voltron show. I don't know why, but I feel like those people are... kind of shitty writers, and don't know how to make anything interesting.

Anon, Soviets didn't guard the borders of the entire Warsaw Pact. Cold War borders were mined and monitored by the relevant country. The situation here is slightly different in the sense that they're not trying to keep people from leaving the communist states, but if anything it's worse because it's people from hostile powers trying to get in.

Callum kind of doesn't excel at anything you'd expect a prince to excel at. So you've got that right at the very least. Though it is kind of an integral part of his character, and he does appear to be growing really fast in comparison to others too.
But beyond that Ezran is a pre-pubertal literal child. No shit he doesn't compare to trained teenagers and adults.

And Soren? Soren hasn't been shown to be a chump at all. The opposite most if anything.
If anything he has probably been shown to be more competent than Claudia. Even if Claudia can probably pull some off some rather insane magic feats.
But I mean Soren has been shown to be really competent at the arts of combat. While being rather reliable and competent in general.
Claudia on the other hand has been shown to be skilled in the arts of magic, but beyond that, unlike Soren, she has been shown to be a total klutz and bafoon.

Then there are other highly competent men. Like Harrow, Viren, Runaan, etc, etc. Though they haven't had female partners to act as their direct counterparts.
So are you really basing it all on Gren being a bit of a naïve fool while having a lower rank than Amaya?

Why would you do that? Do you actively seek out things to annoy you even if you have to dig deep and create a narrative to attack yourself with? Because you're really reaching far here.

Yeah they're pen&paper roleplaying games more so than straight novels.
But in terms of their world building and lore it's some of the most impressive stuff I've come across. Especially when it comes to the aspects of history and developments over time which sounded like it was in line with what you were looking for.

But yeah those lorebooks can be incredibly interesting to read even if you aren't playing the games. Or so I would say myself at the very least.
Also. Just to make it clear. Earthdawn is like the prequel of Shadowrun. So they're kind of connected. Though licencing rights have since split the two apart since they're now owned by different companies, so one is no longer allowed to directly mention the other. But lorewise they still go hand in hand. And the former still became the latter in their canon.

I also absolutely love the magic systems of these settings. More so with Earthdawn than with Shadowrun. But both really. They're as stated related to one another in the end.

The tectonic plates of our own world already move at like 1cm a year as is. And that's without ripping up giant volcanic rifts right through all the plates.

We've also had like a dozen or so entirely new islands having appeared within the last 1000 years or whatever. And a couple of islands that have sunk and disappeared the same as well.

Cutting up the earth like that sounds like it could be scary. I am not entirely sure I'd trust such an endeavour.

Viren almost fits that quota, but he doesn't leave too much impression and feels more like Zhao at worst, Azula at best. We don't even know his motivations, we know he wants egg and wants no peace with elves, but we don't have explicit answers why to either of those. Like, Ozai was bred into becoming a conquerer, that doesn't need much explanation, it's something visually and verbally was relayed to us in the show.

Viren on the other hand, i can practically see a season finality where Callum tells him "there is still good inside you, fight it, dark magic corrputed you or some shit"

Yes and no. It is definitely cute and fun and has its moments. You're getting a mixed bag.

That probably could be adressed in a re-release.
We know they're using 3D models with predetermined keyframes and the software takes care of interpolating the movement between said keyframes.

Unless they've burned and trashed their data, It wouldn't exactly be trivial, but certainly not that difficult, to render the whole thing again with an increased frame rate.

Well. It wasn't my intention to guilt trip you or anything. I mean I didn't even think the uploader was in the thread.
But it's as you say. It does appear to be a minority who asks for it. And that's just what I am lamenting over. It's frustrating. I miss when that wasn't the case.

It's like 3 times the filesize and while the actual increase of quality remains extremely negligible. But people still go for it.
