For the longest time, the people in charge pretty much stated that if any character from Vertigo got shown in DC proper, they'd be effectively neutered to fit in with the rest of the capes. Its only recently that we've started to move past that kind of shit, and actually get those characters appearing in the DCU as themselves.
Also, I liked what Constantine pulled off in the latest issue personally. It looked like something an actual magic-user would use, instead of glorified DnD silliness.
