I feel like the show lost it's tonal compass after Penn Ward left because of his mental breakdown.

Not enough fun episodes, to many lore episodes, questions that had disappointing answers (Finn's dad, Marcelines mom, Peebles origin, Jakes powers origin, origin of Ice Kings crown).

I feel like the show has been on of "Well, we made an underground comic book into one of the most kids TV shows in a decade. Now what?"

Finn had a wet dream about Flame Princess after she and the Ice King fought each other. He then intentionally got them to fight so he could recreate the dream.

The fights escalated and destroyed the entire Ice kingdom. Finn admitted what he did to FP and she broke up with him.

Also, Cosmic Owl was in the wet dream or something.

he started having actual wet dreams, he told jake he likes it and he gets it after seeing FP and IK fight, so he gets them to fight over and over until things escalate and she burns down the ice kingdom and he admits IK did nothing wrong and they break up, jake urged him to do so

Flame Princess was created as stand in for loligum since they had no concrete plans for her and didn't want to waste Welch as a VA. Of course everyone except Sugar hated her so they wrote her off in the most hilarious humiliating way possible

Nothing else needs to be said. Show has been kind if garbage for years now, with a few strong non-story driven episodes here and there plus maybe two decents arcs overall.

Best we could have hoped for was the final stretch to be one last big save the world plot where Finn finally got to mature into a hero and be recognised for it again like early seasons with no caveats. Wrap up Ice king/Betty and Bubbline if you must, but let Finn finally fucking have a proper lasting win again.

As it is we can be grateful if the ending isn't him fucking up due to character flaws we've seen him outgrow and get forced back on him by shitty writing several times, followed by Marcie, FP, and Bubbles saving the day while treating him like a kid again.

Screening the finale A WEEK EARLY to such a large, unrestricted audience was CN’s biggest fucking mistake. It would’ve been awesome to join in on all the hype for the finale and discuss/speculate up until the actual premiere at 6/5c, but now every single AT thread is guaranteed to bring up spoilers that’ll ruin some surprising elements within the episode.

Show starts out fun and goofy with a hint of lore, it becomes bogged down with lore and relationship drama midway through, the latter half of the series isn't as good as the beginning but it still has nice moments.
Pretty sure the finale is gonna be a huge disappointment.

It was good for a while and then it wasn't. There were a few scraps worth looking at if you don't mind rummaging around through the years worth of collected rubbish. I will remember the show with fondness as it is something I watched with a young nephew when the show was fresh and new and he was still part of my life; his mother hadn't begun isolating him from contact with all family and former friends.

He's not entirely wrong.

First half is Finn and Jake doing what they can to setup a good scenario, second is most of the established secondary characters pulling in to secure the win. It fits the general tone of the last few seasons (Finn can't win on his own, everything has to be a team effort, other people with higher power levels generally finish things after he gets them involved) but if you're not a fan of that and prefer old seasons where he was much more central to every big conflict you're going to have a bad time.

The issue is the absolutely fucking awful writing of Finn for the past several seasons and how completely mediocre every dramatic arc has been. The show can actually still be decent when it rarely dips back to the older vibe, it just can't handle the new set up nearly as well.

I think they tried many different characters arcs, but most of them went nowhere. Rebecca's FP had her dealing with whether or not she's a threat to the world and if Finn is able to help her become a good person. That gets dropped when she left. After that, one arc says she probably can't go back to her kingdom. Jakesuit has her go back. Vault of Bones has her go into a dungeon with Finn and doing some kickass shit. They never go to another dungeon together. Frost & Fire and Earth & Water opened up an arc involving her having trust issues. Completely dropped by Red Throne thanks to Cinnamon, brought back up during the Cooler only to be dropped again in the end of the same episode. It did open up the possibility of Phoebe and Bubblegum having some sort of special bond together. I mean, Bubblegum was the first person she gave her name to. That was probably meant to go somewhere, but nope. Completely gone and mostly replaced with a lame rap gimmick by the end.
They should've picked one and stuck with it. I'm a little mad that she and Finn broke up, but they could've done something with her after that. I'm fine with Finntress. Just give Phoebe something to do that's actually cool.

Finn could have really ended up with anyone. He could have ended up with a random anthropomorphic bat that shows up on a final where-are-they-now montage. But he got NOTHING.

Because the game went from being the focus and feeling so well made with legitimate rules that it could be a real game

Gotta be Finn but Ice King is close too. They actually benefited in some ways from character development and were cool, funny, and likable until the end. The Simon stuff didn't take away from IK at all and while some parts of Finn were harmed by his maturation I liked other parts of it.

But all in all the best characters were either Shelby or Peppermint Butler.

I love Jake but I always wish the show made him a more flexible character. I don't feel like he would have any interest in giving a shit about Bubblegum, Ice King, or Marceline without Finn. They needed to make him a bit more active so he would be more a part of the world and shit, or something like that.

When they write Jake good he's really good but a lot of the time he feels very so-so.

I loved how the S1 episodes had more unusual morals that Finn and Jake learned (eg, rebelling against the wizard and saving the temple themselves) and then normal morals that they completely ignored (don't take offers of power from creepy strangers). Dungeon was like that too.
