Antz was the other movie that came out around the same time. The movie you have pictured is A Bug's Life, which is pretty much a cartoon version of Seven Samurai. But with bugs.

And they were completely on board with the Bird plan even when Flick was the main designer and oversaw its construction in spite of his past gadget fuck ups, the only reason they listened to him then was because his "warrior bugs" supported the idea.

There isn't one, some faggot did some really reaching film essay on youtube about which bug is which samurai despite there being more than seven circus clown bugs. The film really has nothing to do with Seven Samurai or the Magnificent Seven beyond the basic premise of desperate peasants hire gang to defend them from bandits; structurally, thematically, tonally, they are nothing alike.

I'm not saying they acted in the correct way, but ultimately Flick did something so horrendous and damaging to the colony that they probably would've been justified in doing anything short of execution to him.

Is this that unreasonable, though? You have a person who they know is a chronic failure in something and whom they've already seen ruin everything they try to fix, but in that situation they have the advice of seven supposed master experts that it's actually a great idea, and they're already desperate anyway.

Based on how well they performed when they rescued Dot they should have expected them to be super eager to actually fight the grasshoppers rather than trick them. Which would you rather support, an incredibly labor intensive and convoluted project designed by a chronic fuck up that's likely to only scare Hopper off for a year before he decides to come back and pick up where he left off, or these hardened warriors who've already faced down a bird by themselves killing every single grasshopper in a two way massacre?
