So this video might be controversial here, but hear me out:

Watching it, its kind of clear that the western equivalent to the otaku fandom was furries. However, in the otaku fandom in japan, it was a lot more constructive with the production of independent OVAs in the 80's and the like, which lead to the actual government subsidizing movies like Akira along with other. In America, this seemed to be the direction it would go in with independent movies like Fritz the Cat making a lot of money. However, it quickly fizzled out and, well, the rest of the video goes into detail about it.

My question is, was there any way western animation could've had the otaku OVA renaissance back in the 80's, or is the possibility of that sort of dead with how consolidated social media is?
