They took Sam Raimi, a guy known only for B horror movies, and he made the Spider-Man trilogy.
They took Peter Jackson, a guy known only for Z-horror movies, and he made the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

What studio execs don't realize is that those were rare. They tried taking some indie film nobody, Gareth Edwards, and put him in charge of a Godzilla reboot and we wound up with a Godzilla movie where Godzilla doesn't show up until the one hour mark because "No, the REAL story is about the human family trying to get back together!"
Then there was the coke-fueled indie film dumbass, Josh Trank, that Fox got to direct the Fantastic Four reboot and every single thing about that exploded in their faces.

Studios want to take a gamble and get the next Raimi or Jackson, but for every one success like that, you get fifty Snyder-tier disasters.

Wow, you're right, that's really a conundrum. It's a shame there's no easy way to fix that problem. If only somebody would make easily digestible picture books that established those concepts, that would sure make things easier for somebody creating a multi-million-dollar film franchise based on a particular property. He really got the short end of the stick by being put in charge of something he had no conceivable way of learning about, poor fella.

No. Adaptations can take liberties. The rest of Burton's Batman was a great interpretation of the character where the *point* was that he'd become cold, distant and inhuman. It's a subtext running through the film.
Nolan's Batman killed out of desperation or if there was no reasonable alternative.
Snyder's Batman never had that subtext to make the change work.

And misunderstood it, just like Watchmen. TDKR is a great Batman book because of its backdrop and Miller's far left politics. Snyder is a fucking Randist, he took out the context of what fueled that Batman and we got a legit psychopath in the suit. Fuck this guy. He has managed to ruin Batman, Superman and Watchmen within like 10 years. This is a historical achievement. Taking gold, turning into ash and then mixing that ash with your turd and pretending you have created art, the man needs to be given an award or something for the incompetence displayed.

Man of Steel had the potential to be the biggest cape film ever. Do you remember the marketing campaign and how fucking hyped people were? They were expecting classic Reeves Superman. An embodiment of heroism of hope and strength and goodness. How rare is that in a modern audience, to be excited for that? But Snyder instead tried to force a tinge of darkness and cynicism where it didn't belong, despite the marketing showing clearly it wasn't what people wanted.

In case of Watchmen, people actually believe that it's an accurate representation of what comic is about. He can never ruin the source material, sure as fuck didn't stop short of ruining the perception of those materials. I'm also triggered because some day there was a possibility that we could've gotten a TDKR inspired adaptation in the same sense as OML adaptation. And he probably set back silver screen Superman more so than Superman Returns.

That's my contention though. Returns came too early, but audiences were ready for it come Man of Steel. It had the bombastic action coupled with the genuine heroism, and a little bit of reflection on whether Clark was amazing because he was different, or like us. Two different commercials with Jor-El and Pa Kent counseling Clark was a superb idea. The marketing campaign was pitch-perfect in finding an audience but the movie's departure from that pitch lost them.

It would've been better if they gave it to some arthouse director and gave him a budget of 15-20 million dollar and asked him to make something of it. We're never going to get an accurate Watchmen adaptation because it is too complex, too postmodern (in literary sense), too ingrained in the medium but someone could have easily used elements of it to make an actual good and watchable film which resonated the book thematically.

As I've said several times, no, the difference is that Burton never claimed to be basing his version of Batman on a specific story, then get his claims wrong. People always complain about Batman killing. It's a retroactive complaint about the Burton and Nolan films that's generally ignored *because* those are good films. Neither one tried to justify it in the dumb, incorrect way Snyder did. They just worked it into the plot/character so people were invested enough to not mind the departure from the comics as much

Raimi had been making decent low budget studio pictures for decades before he got Spider-Man. He'd done a western with A-List actors, he'd done a Fargo style crime drama and he'd done a mid-budget superhero movie that came out after Burton's Batman. All were successes. That's on the people who weighed up his attributes before making a decision, not that they were putting all their hopes on an untested quantity.

It still irks me that of all the problems this film had people get angry about this scene when it was so well done. Clark clearly wants to save the people without having to resort to killing Zod, pleading with him to stop so he won't have to. And when he does make the decision and puts him down he immediately breaks down about about it (great bit of acting from Cavill there, very believable).

Like yeah the insane destruction of Metropolis and making out with Lois in a crater where they were probably standing on like 30 dead bodies minimum was fucked, but Zod's death scene was very in-character for Superman in my opinion.

Gareth Edwards got partially fucked by studio retardation. My old flatmate worked on the film doing post effects, there was meant to be a load of action with a big battle in vegas. His company spent months on it, but the studio didn't get permission for the rights to show the famous casinos getting destroyed so pretty much all their work was binned and you just got the shot of the aftermath.

I think the worst scene is when Nite Owl and Silk are beating those gang members, in the comic it's kind of an innocent moment as the two start reliving their crime-fighting days, in the movie its an edgy massacre where they both mutilate the thugs and there's for example a shot of Dan breaking a guy's arm with CG blood splashing in your face. Complete fucking tone-deaf

Not the anon you're replaying to but I think the problem is that Snyder was all over the place in his message, because it took backseat to looking cool whenever possible.
So you have Snyderfags make the argument that Batman was a fallen hero that was maiming and killing guys and was going to kill Superman because he thought Superman was an inhuman alien.
But then the resolution to the titualr conflict is tohat Batman realizes Superman is human after all (but he kills humans too). But then they say, Superman inspired him to be good again! Except Batman then goes off and kills more dudes to save Martha. So really Batman was redeemed, but just not yet?
It's constant damage control rather than just admitting the director was an idiot that cared more about cool moments than a coherent character arc.

2 was mediocre as hell. The CGI in the final battle and the title sequence hurt to look at. Literal ps2 graphics, like you could tell Marvel rushed this shitshow out.

It also included a lot of moments of forced humor, some of which ruined any tension or emotion present in the scenes. This one had a better story, yeah, but the first one will always win in execution.

The thing is that all well made superhero movies had good humor moments in them, even Nolan's. And not only that, all superhero comics have some degree of self awareness and humor, specially after the silver age. It's part of the genre. Even Snyder's movies had some attempt, except pretty much all of them fell flat.

I'd argue that that doesn't make any more sense in a continuity where Batman generally doesn't kill.
The Joker has killed thousands. It breaks the premise either way, kill code or not.
