Not as good as first, the villain is weaker compared to Syndrome and you forget that Dash is even in the movie. Still pretty good overall, the improved animation lends to some really cool scenes they weren’t able to do in 2004.

The villain is better than Syndrome, but they are far more similar than they are different
A tech genius lures supers in with promises of a chance to do super hero work again, only to betray them with a plot to end all supers forever
But, Buddy/Syndrome is way less sympathetic than Evelyn. Buddy concocted this plan after someone he liked rejected his affection and plans for them to be together despite no real connection or agreement from the party he was interested in. Evelyn was bitter because instead of doing something smart, her father relied on heroes that were too scared to actually do anything when he needed them.
Syndrome is a bitter virgin incel, Evelyn is reverse batman.

The movie splits time equally between Bob and Helen. Bob's arc is about character development, Helen's arc is the same as Bob's arc in the first movie. The film is as much about Bob as it is Helen.

Interesting outlook. Personally, I have an opposite opinion.

To put it frankly, I find Evelyn's motivation weak as it doesn't actually make sense. Criminals killed her father, and she blamed heroes for it. Her reasoning is that because her father admired heroes, he relied too heavily on them, but it kind of ignores that had heroes been legal, they might've been saved.

It's also illogical because she's willing to kill innocent people to prove her point. Her motivation is that an innocent family member was killed by a criminal, so she becomes a criminal to kill innocents to prove that heroes are incapable of saving lives. It just doesn't jive.

I was also very confused by her relationship with her brother. They never interact with each other one-on-one. They only 'talk' about their relationship. She waited until he completely invested in heroes, then hypnotized him, and was going to have the heroes he supported commit murder. It would've destroyed his reputation. Yet, she tried to briefly save him. I never got the sense that she actually cared for him before that point.

I also felt like she was written differently in the beginning than the end result. She focuses a lot on Elastigirl, saying she's the most capable, commenting how it must be nice to not be in Mr. Incredible's shadow any more. I got the sense that she had some sort of connection to Elastigirl that was hidden from us. I thought she was handing Elastigirl those victories specifically for her, because of how often Evelyn talked her up. But it went nowhere.

I found her very underwhelming and rather easily defeated.

Not really. Seven years ago would have been most fitting. In 2011, we already had Up and Toy Story 3, which leads me to believe they would have been fully capable of making this exact same movie. Instead, we got Cars 2.

It's pretty good. If the original was a 10, this is probably an 8. The characters, action and animation are all fantastic. My only real complaints are that the plot twist is easy to see coning, the new superhero have lame designs, and some of the stuf with jack jack felt a little too kiddy. Still the best Pixar film since inside out.

Good point. But she's still willing to kill innocent families despite the fact that superheroes were already illegal to being with. So helping her brother trying to legalize them so that she can persuade a the government to permanently ban them is already obtuse, but to kill people along the way? Her backstory doesn't justify this kind of thinking.

They never actually TALK to each other. We don't know what they ACTUALLY think of each other from their interaction with each other. They introduce each other and talk about the other when they're not present. It's not the same thing. I get that Evelyn respects her brother's abilities, but I never got the impression that she loved him, was protective of him, or wanted to help him. They were just constantly in each other's presence.

Like I said, I personally got the impression that the writers wrote Evelyn one way when they story started, but something changed midway. Her focus on Elastigirl felt like there was a personal connection she had with her. I may be totally wrong on this, but the other people I saw the movie with picked up on this as well. I watched the film yesterday too.
There's not really any cancerous feminism in the movie.
It's made entirely clear that Elasti-Girl is the first hero in the line because she causes the least damage compared to Mr. Incredible and Frozono.
The reason why Mr. Incredible was mad at not being the first super in the line is because he still wanted to revive his glory days, not because a woman got chosen instead of him.
The whole bumbling dad bullshit was just made-up for the trailers.The reason why Bob struggles with his sons is because he's exhausted at helping them, not because "lol men can't keep with the children."
Also, Helen and Bob fuck up at the end and the kids had to rescue them, just like in the first movie.

The only semblance of "feminism" is in an awkward conversation Helen has with Evelyn where she whines about his brother getting and the credit and the world being "a man's world" before she quickly changes the topic. Which is minor filler and gets undermined because she's a psychopath.

Anybody saying that there's a feminist agenda in the movie is a fear-mongering cunt.

This is incorrect. Bob struggles the first week but handles everything well afterwards. His only issue after that is Jack Jack (Violet too but he apologizes soon after and that's pretty much resolved). Dealing a baby with 15+ powers activating at random is pretty fucking stressful. Helen doesn't even know Jack Jack has powers until the end of the movie.

Watched back to back it feels like one solid long movie.

Bob starts movie 1 by not bothering to learn about Buddy or take any interest, simply sending him home for being powerless. Perhaps it was partially Buddy's fault for interfering, but Buddy had nothing to do with Bob stopping the guy from hurting his neck which was the snowball that started the avalanche to making supers illegal.

We cut to Bob being a corporate Zombie. While physically at home he is emotionally absent, leaving the kids entirely to Helen. He does nothing but dream about the good old days and he shows zero interest in his own kids until he is forced to get angry at the dinner table. Later he does out to stop a fire, which leads to him getting an offer from Syndrome.

Bob goes through a full mid-life crisis. He enjoys the thrill, the flirting, the being needed. He comes even more distant from his family. It isn't until Helen and the kids show up to save him and are "fake killed" does he realize he was focused on the wrong things

In movie two, Bob, who is now use to being a hero again leads the charge against the underminer. He delegates support to everyone else while trying to handle it by himself and it fails

Helen, who has a better track record for low collateral damage is selected to be the new Face Hero. Bob is upset. He may now realize how much he would miss his family but he still wants to be a hero, not yet realizing how much of a terrible father he actually is.

Bob has to learn to be a real father for the first time ever and by the end of the movie, is the first one to tell Helen she needs to go save the day while he does the support job of stopping the boat.

The Screen Slaver who Helen fights, is arguably also created by Bob. While her motivation is without a doubt the weakest point in the movie, she isn't wrong. (to be continued)

The point was, be it super heroes or our phones, if we want the world changed, we have to stop relying on others to do it for us, and we have to do it ourselves.

Obviously the villains methods were crazy and thus she had to be stopped, but her point remained valid.

Watched back to back, the movies complement each other well.

I thought about this, then realized Disney obviously knows what they're doing. There's actually a test to automatically determine if a video will cause seizures. You can tell that certain shots were zoomed further back, flickering decreased, etc. to avoid issues.

I mean, the idea that "Mommy and daddy died waiting for super heroes to save them means superheroes should remain illegal so people don't rely on them as a crutch" is still kind of stupid, but makes more overall sense.

That said, Syndrome had more personality, more personal charm, and a much cooler secret volcano base- complete with goons and a sexy assistant.

That said, Mindslaver used hypnotism on Elastigirl and that's totally my fetish.

I liked both.

Jack-Jack gave Bob a much much harder time than Helen. She had no idea he had powers. Chasing a baby around with all kinds of powers was what was draining bob. It's reasonable too, and through the course of the movie he catches up on sleep and gets on top of it. It's pretty well done.

You should consider rewatching it, as this isn't Syndrome's motivation at all.

As a kid, he wanted to be Incredible's sidekick, to prove that he was special as well. But Bob turned him down because Syndrome didn't have powers. Syndrome felt like he was being looked down upon because he wasn't born special like Bob.

His motivation was then to sell superpowers to everyone in the world. Because if everyone is special, than no one is.

The movie was great but I noticed near the end Elasrigirl goes on a 15 minute rant about protecting the future of the Super race by refusing to mix with inferior human genetics and warns that the day of the rope will come for humanity to atone for their discrimination against the superior race. It was pretty jarring, especially since Screenslaver's goggles were off. But that kind of boldness really helped the film shine with Raimi's script.

Honestly there weren't THAT many scenes in the movie that were cringey and in your face about the whole subject. Like, they'd bring it up every so often but it was never a "WE ARE WOMYN AND WE CAN DO EVERYTHING BETTER THAN A MAN." It seemed they mostly used it as a way for Elastigirl and the villain to get chummy so it's at least a little bit of surprise she was the baddie. Fuck it was so obvious. I don't care for heavy handed social justice in my movies, (it's impossible for it not to exist at all since Hollywood is radically left leaning) but it wasn't heavy handed in Incredibles 2, it was there, but not in your face, and it didn't make the characters shit like it does in the new SW movies.

Alone its nothing but all in one package it's an add-up issue. With the bus of women cheering her on, to her essential fans being primarily women, to her being the one to use the gun because the guy misunderstood and was going to use it against her but she used it for heroics, to her being the one to take out the designated female villain, to bob staying at home, etc. You say "comb through" as if it's extremely subtle and rare occurrences. Bob causes more damage because he's has super strength and near indestructability, he can be far more direct. She doesn't, she has to use finesse and be more cautious, thinking things through more. Bob does what any man with a family does all the time. Sacrifices what he wants for the good of the family. Helen does the same of a sort. She is ready to drop everything and return to her family if they need her. It took all of them telling her "we'll be all right without you," for her to go after the villain. You went into the movie seeking reasons to be angry at feminism (they're are plenty) but it's not thick in Incredibles 2. Things work within the story and fit the characters as they existed in the first one.

he specifically fixated on Mr. Incredible. He was president of his fan club. He didn't try to go to any other super or even try to strike out on his own. Even before he showed up with his inventions, he said he knew everything about Mr. Incredible and was inspired by his motto of "be true to yourself."

Bob said no such thing. He recognized the kid as a member of his fan club that had been showing up over and over again, and suddenly he was there declaring himself as his sidekick. He ejected him without mention of his powers. Then later, he told him that he works alone- again, no mention of his powers.

It's also worth mentioning that Mr. Incredible never had a sidekick, and did indeed work alone. He wasn't even teaming up with Frozone or Elastigirl at the time, and one was his best friend while the other was his fiance.

He and Elastigirl even had that little talk where he would have to start putting THEIR needs above his own.

The Incredibles 2 suggests that either Brad Bird grew as a person or John Lasseter's influence was lessened, because actually helping and saving people was given way more attention. The villain is the one spewing objectivist horseshit and the good guys are the ones to tell her "no, you're a cunt, people should help each other".

Elastigirl was the weakest character in the movie. She learned nothing from her adventure and only serves to be the kickass movie. Mr. Incredible had a similar role in the first one but he grew and learned from his experiences which he does again here.

The more I think about this movie the less I like it. It assumes so hard that the audience hasn't seen the first one that the movie itself feels like it isn't aware of the first movie. The movie immediately starts out by harping on points the first one resolved. Not to mention it contradicts parts of the first one which made it feel like the family should be aware that Jack Jack has powers. The ending to the first one is so satisfying because it shows how the family developed over the course of the film, but this one is frustrating for how it feels like they've actually taken a step backwards from that.

Why did the writing and story have to be so meh? This could have been a home run but it just plays the safe Finding Dory route instead. Granted it's easily better than that film but it's still nowhere near as compelling in the first in those two departments. The guy has aged incredibly well all things considered. His voice is more like an old man now though; you can see here that he sounds more tremulous and has lost that trademark baritone. No, Syndrome wasn't rich and powerful yet.

The movie said it was shortly after supers were banned so it was basically within weeks/months since that fateful night Bob told Buddy to fuck off. So what probably happened was that:
(a) The supers were all relocated so the direct lines were worthless and went to empty houses or disconnected numbers, and
(b) They were probably not going to answer any calls for help for fear that they'll be made an example since it was so soon since the laws banning supers came around. Depends though.

Gazerbeam was also some sort of political activist or politician and he still cared deeply about doing the right thing and for super welfare so if he ever actually got the call, he might have actually jumped out to go save the old guy.

BUT what I don't get is that since the robbers were ALREADY IN THE HOUSE, why the old guy would've thought that calling a super like Gazerbeam - who isn't known for his mobility - would've saved him from the robbers. This is where I think Evelyn was being stupid too. It wouldn't have mattered if Gazerbeam showed up, the robbers still would've found the old guy at the phones and shot him anyway. Sure it wouldn't change her narrative, but she made it out like the supers ditched her father for no good reason as opposed to the fact that they probably didn't have access to those phone lines anymore. SHE was smart enough to understand that. On the other side of the issue though, the brother is an idiot for thinking that the phones were a better option than going into the saferoom. You could still believe in supers while also hiding in the saferoom so that the armed intruders who were IN YOUR HOME ALREADY can't shoot you two minutes later.

This part of the backstory is probably my only real gripe with the writing.

For all the whining about feminism I kind of wish it had something to do with Evelyn's motives better at least. She was a predictable villain but "Depending on heroes got my dad killed" just felt like a weaker motive than "My brother constantly overshadows me" with all the complaints she makes about it in the beginning.

She said weird things were happening, and Syndrome showed up to get Jack Jack BEFORE the Parrs got home.

And then we see that her actual account of what happened was a report being given to the government guy who immediately erased her memory.

Although it does seem odd that HE didn't tell the Parrs, but now you're kind of overthinking it because then they'd need to have a scene, and I don't know.

Having to reconcile her personal life with her super hero life would probably have taken up a good chunk of time. They seem more interested in the inter-family dynamic in the B story while only one family member gets focus in the A story.

Having Helen deal with super hero stuff, Bob deal with family stuff, and Violet deal with secret identity stuff might have been a bit too much.

As it worked in the movie, the issue was less about Violet and her boyfriend and more about how Violet and Bob interact regarding the boyfriend.

I really would've preferred they find a way to make this one about the kids. While Bob's suffering was very enjoyable, especially when he saw his car being sold on tv, it still felt like a story I'd seen before.

The only time in the entire movie helping people is cited as a motivation is when Bob gets yelled at by his boss for wanting to help the dude getting mugged in an alley. At literally every other point superheroics are only mentioned as an avenue to revel in being superior, and are only valued by the cast for that reason. Incredibles 2 was much better in this regard, so clearly someone at Pixar noticed how fucked up the first movie was and fixed it.

One of the main plot points was Dash having to suppress his greatness to fit in with his lessers. Mr Incredible himself was regularly frustrated by not being allowed to be super, and reveled in the opportunity once it was provided.

It's not in your face about it, but it's hard to deny the strong Randian themes once you look.
