Batman has tons of gadgets to assist him when his peak human performance fails him, Superman can both do everything a man can but SUPER (heh) alongside a couple things a man wishes he could do like fly, Iron Man showcases amazing technology with tons of cool doohickeys and things you can do with the suit, Wolverine's a deadly scrapper tailor-made to fight with his claws and healing status, and Spidey is an acrobat extraordinaire with web-slinging/wall-crawling/his strength and agility. They also are really good for straight-up action stories, which is important for a visual medium like comics.
This in turn allows a batch of villains to oppose the hero in various themes - motivation, power sets, or psychologically. Batman and Spidey have the best rogues' galleries in comics, Superman has Lex and a bunch of good but underrated baddies, Wolverine at least has Sabertooth and is always fun to set loose on a lot of different villains, and Iron Man at least has potential, as /co/ constantly talks on.
