Does your uni have any such groups? It's good fun. In my experience indie game devs are really open and tolerant.
I don't really like university, but I'm passionate about mathematics, so it's worth it. Also graph theory is scary, I'm taking it this semester but I'll drop it xD
Research is more about having a decent adviser that get's you invested. I think I can even skip the test to enter our masters program. Grades only count for some unis... I've flunked 2 disciplines and will have dropped two others by the end of the semester, I will also have an article published and will have talked in a congress by the end of the year.
