Check the first page and first double-page spread and you'll notice the sign on the front of the shop is slightly cleaner in the Honto scan than the other two. I still use CMOA since there are more sales there and the differences aren't that noticeable outside of a few pages but maybe something to keep in mind if you're autistic about scans.

Okay, so I guess I'll start off.

I propose we limit each slot in the manga section to one work per author. My argument for it is simple and it comes down to opportunity costs. Each slot that goes to another work by Harade or Takahashi (even if we all agree they are deserved entries) is a slot that's not going to another individual artist that might have a unique art style or story.
If a new reader were to read a work from one of the chart's slot entries and liked it, chances are they will search out other works by that same author anyway.
Admittedly, this would be prioritizing diversity over pure quality, but the alternative would be to end up with a chart composed of works by 4 or 5 authors.

Now, some will say that we could simply just add more slots than replace existing ones, but this is just kicking the can down the road. Eventually, we will run out of space, and so we have to economise.

As to which works to keep, both Nii-chan and Yuki to Matsu are their respective author's highest-rated works (according to the Tier List polling). I suggest we remove the following entries:

>Yata and Momo
>Color Recipe
>Happy Kuso Life
>Stigmata

And replace them with the following entries:
>Gatapishi by Arai Niboshiko
>Hadakeru Kaibutsu by Ogeretsu Tanaka
>Acid Town by Kyuugou
>In These Words by Guilty Pleasure

Even if anons disagree with my picks, can we agree on the method?

The plot is good too, the main couple are a pair of amnesiacs searching for a magic bell that follows the 8 sufferings of Buddhism, each tied to a small set of side characters. Considering the novel’s length its impressive that the main plot and 8 side plots are resolved under 150 chapters.

I mostly agree, however I do think that there may be worthy exceptions. Nii-chan and One Room Angel are different enough that they could be by completely different authors. I think that both are excellent and should be on the chart. A similar argument could be made for Yuki to Matsu and Stigmata, though they have a weaker case in my eyes. Both Harada and Takahashi Hidebu are brilliant artists and good storytellers. I would like the concept to be revised to:

I agree with this. IDK Reducing Harada's presence to just Nii-chan could turn new readers off from all of her work.

Who is the chart for? Is it for us to feel superior in our tastes or is the chart for our noobs to get into readiing BL?

Let's try to avoid doubling but in some cases exceptions are better than crossing out good/unique titles just to squeeze in more artists.

Anon who makes the Tierlists, what do you think about making a mangaka tierlist? The results might be surprising because there are some mangaka who are consistently good but don't have a lot of standouts, some who have one amazing manga and a lot of mediocre ones, some who have great art and shit stories, etc. It would be interesting how these all measure up against each other.

While I agree One Room Angel and Nii-chan are almost directly opposed in tone, unfortunately this adds to the problem of again privileging authors with multiple works. One Room Angel is excellent, but does it merit depriving a new mangaka, and by extension their entre body of work from being given a spotlight? With the limited space we have, I don't think so.

That's fair, I was struggling to think what to replace Oni to Tengoku with anyway. I don't feel strongly about them. Actually, maybe Scratch Blue would be a better replacement for Oni no Tengoku, leaving Usagi no Mori to be replaced by My Sempai. Another thought I had was Boy Meets Maria, though that title didn't do much for me in the end.

I think we think of the chart a bit differently. I was trying to think of what I'd want someone new to BL to read rather than thinking of it as a showcase of the artistry within BL, but I can get behind that too. I still think One Room Angel should be kept though.
Remember that there aren't limited spots, chart anon can make the chart longer or shorter as required. Our only limit is file size, and if that became a problem we could always have one manga chart and another for everything else. Nothing is being taken from other mangakas by having two of Harada's on the chart other than a bit of visual attention, which is why I do think the number of Harada titles needs pruning. But really the only thing stopping newer mangakas from being on the chart is their work being recommended and hyped.

I suppose that's fair. My argument was based on the premise that we have to retain the same amount of slots, but if chart anon can get away with adding another row I guess it's fine. The problem is we are right at the limit as is (3.8 MG).

I think adding multiple charts would be pretty cumbersome and could make the opening posts too cluttered.

I disagree and I think I can make a compelling case for replacing Stigmata with In These Words.

SPOILERS for STIGMATA and IN THESE WORDS ahead:

Both works centre on a seme police detective recruiting a uke with specialized skills to apprehend an unknown murdered. Both series have ukes with traumatic pasts. Both feature plenty of gore and murder. Both semes are bisexual.

One thing we have to admit is that Stigmata is skewed heavily towards the plot at the cost of fleshing out a relationship. This would be fine, but the overarching murder mystery isn't really very compelling or really all that well-executed at the end. The eventual confrontation with the murdered is pretty underwhelming: they just stumble into him by chance while visiting a suspect's apartment and it's all over within 5 pages.

By comparison, the dynamic doesn't fare much better either. There's a lack of on-page chemistry between the leads and the romance mostly amounts to pining from the uke's perspective throughout the majority of the series. In fact, the seme's coming out to his boss feels incredible sudden and almost out of place, like it's something's the author inserted to compensate for the lack of a developing romance.

ITW by contrast is just more. There's clearly planting and misdirection to keep the reader engaged throughout and the overall plot is more structured than Stigmata. The main couple is also probably one of the best you'll find in this genre. The romance is more fleshed out, the chemistry between the leads is better and the dialogue is snappier, heavy on the sarcasm, flirting and innuendo. ITW also has the advantage of having the relationship develop in tandem with the mystery, dedicating equal time to both. Besides plenty of sultry scenes, ITW is also that rare BL that actually captures moments of genuine physical and emotional tenderness.

In short, a superior replacement.

They may seem similar on the surface but if I couldn't have one I wouldn't go for the other, or rec one to the fan of other because they just aren't similar. I agree that Stigmata could've tried to develop the chemistry a bit more but I didn't find it lacking either, on the other hand I think ITW suffers from a fair amount of pretentiousness and the gruesome sexual violence at the beginning would be a turn-off to many whereas Stigmata has a refreshingly pragmatic yet gentle approach to sex. I think they're both great manga but definitely wouldn't pick and replace one over the other.

Seiji by himself is better than the couple of Spend Wisely. Also Dearest Cop has comfy slice of life plot that makes sense while Spend Wisely reads like a slapstick comedy for a good half of it's short run. REAL unpopular opinion coming through, but I'll fight you all on it. I suggest we kick Tricornred Window. I can't think of anything more disappointing on a BL rec Chart than having to read 10 Volumes of manga only to discover at the end there was no actually BL, just bait. Unless Volume 10 pulls an HTU in the bonus chapters, we should chuck this.

I think keeping it is the unpopular opinion nowadays.
I think we should keep it because the story is actually interesting and enjoyable, but I get that most people read BL specifically for romance and would find Tricornered Window disappointing. Maybe if we tag it non-romance?

We need something more concrete anon, though the engrish is a good hit. But a gay kid being bullied in high school isn't really that much of a revelation in the 90's, nor edgy. Getting raped and tied to a wooden fence would probably qualify.
What most anon's care about would be the characters and their dynamic, since that's where the majority of the plot progression, i.e the romance, lies.

Hear of Thomas is so universally recognized that I don't feel like it needs to be on the chart, it's up there with Poe Clan and Kazeki as one the founding works in the genre. I don't think either of these needs to be in the chart. Heck, if this were just about getting something of Hagio Moto's on the chart, I'd be shilling the fuck out of my all-time favorite: Marginal. I think I could make a decent case for it. We don't have any other Sci Fi on there, for one. I also love Heart of Thomas, to the extent that I dropped fat stacks on a physical copy even though they're out of print. Yet, despite everything, I absolutely agree with the many anons who have argued previously that Cruel God belongs on the list, even above two others by the same mangaka which I personally like more.

Frankly, it's kinda meh so far. Sure, it has Okujima's art but it's just not particularly gripping and you can feel how contrieved the plot is. Also the pixiv verson has shit quality images so I doubt anyone will want to work on it before any tanko release.

What changed my mind about it belonging on the chart was thinking about the bromance-tier live action adaptation and realizing the anime will probably be similarly neutered. I do still think the manga is BL and reading it would show BL noobs that there are well written plots in the genre. Plus look at pic related. Who'd want to read that except people interested in BL? I'm just not sure it's chart worthy any more, which is why I'm tentatively agreeing with removing it for now.

Me not liking it, ergo it doesn't belong on the chart would indeed be a silly reason, except that's not the reason I gave.
The fact is it's not marketed as BL anymore, and unlike Ten Dance never had any romance. Hence not BL in ANY sense.
And yeah, I am biased. I've been following this series for 5+ years, buying the Sublime translations etc. I've had to put up with years of, let's be honest, rather wrote ghost of the week stories all in the hope that the series will eventually get around to the romance (what the work was advertised as) and what was teased only in extras. And then it never delivered. TW is to BL what LOST was to mystery series, all teasing and no pay-off.

Why would that matter as to whether or not THE MANGA belonged here? MDZA was neutered, but that's still in the chart? The truth is there just wasn't much to neuter.

We already have works like 10 Dance, MADK, and CANIS for that. And I don't like the implication or the precedent that BL works have to sacrifice their romantic elements in order to appeal to a general audience, or that we have to start reaching for other genres to get good manga on the chart.

If you are a guy, the writing is terrible. The writers don't know how gay sex works. Writing is too "flowery" as in they focus more on metaphors than the actual sex taking place. If it weren't for the CG's, it would be cringe. CG's are pixelated to hell and the only saving grace are the moans that your bottom protagonist makes. Only Akira from TNG gets 1 top scene...every other protagonist will be a bottom that acts like a girl.

The designs are a hit or miss. Honestly depends on the game.

Nah, even most fujos find them distasteful nowadays. It's geared towards hyper-edgy emo teenagers and the art style hasn't evolved even though tastes have changed and emo isn't as big any more.
Really weird seeing Okujima's rendition of such 2007 character designs. Look at the guys he draws in his own art, this doesn't seem like his type of thing at all.

Both of them couldn't fuck guys, and yet here's Blondie explicitly pining like a horny school boy. Funny how you always forget that.
Black's conflict isn't that he can't fuck straights guys. As the narrative has already made clear, that won't be an issue. It's that he has a massive complex over relinquishing control. Throughout volume 5 multiple characters tell him how he won't be able to control or manipulate Blondie and that all his flirtation, teasing and provocation is going to turn around on him. And then it finally happens when Blondie ceases to be passive.
Pic here mirrors the scene from Black's past in high school where he convinced an older senior to give him a blowjob. But now HE's the one in a subservient position, realizes that his partner actually has carnal desires too that he won't be able to control and it fucking terrifies him.
Now ask yourself this question, why would an author spend 5 volumes of character development on convincing one of the straight leads to fuck the other guy, only to torpedo it midway through the narrative? And why CONTINUE to emphasize said romantic attraction in subsequent chapters and even on the next volume 6 cover? The answer is obvious if you know anything about story structure.

Ngl, I'll be sad to see Tricornered Window go but I can see why one could be disappointed if there's no romantic pay-off in a supposed BL manga.
Personally it doesn't bother me as much since I tend to care more about the plot than the romance. Well, I guess it would've been even better if we had both.

I understand that, but I thought the whole point of the manga was for his character to grow and move past that or at least saved from this condition. That's the entire point of introducing characters like the wife, no?

So in Volume 4, Ikurou decides he's had enough and is going to burn the mansion down. Except he's such an obsequious slut he can't even do that right, breaks down in the middle of threatening the butler and begs him to fuck him. Oh no, that's def not the point of this manga. The accepting wife was the first tangible chance to break from it all and to actually earn what Ikurou thinks is his obligation - a normal, dignified family life. But the point is that Ikurou only wants that on the surface so the moment the path gets rocky and after scorning Norihiko he gives up, besides Norihiko would loathe to let him get this kind of life in peace.

In that scene they know the house is burning, Ikurou himself says he's deliberately set the fire to break out in another room not to let his resolve fade. After finally revealing their both' true motives, he just changes his plans from regular suicide to a lovers' suicide with Norihiko, who takes him up on the offer because that to him is the greatest act of love, see his flashback a bit earlier in the volume. The cherryblossoms and a biiig part of the relationship with eye trauma like a cherry on top made me go 'oh, so I see your formative ship was Seishiro/Subaru too, huh?' Which I think is also a good reference point for Tourou's relationship.

But that's my point, if both Norihiko and Ikurou perished in the flames there and then, functionally it makes no difference in the narrative. Why bother having a betrayal scene at all, why that bit of character growth, and spend an entire volume rehabilitating the brother's relationship, if nothing comes of it? It's just the plot with the wife all over again with no progression.

My issue isn't really that characters are ending up in fucked up relationships at the end, it's that the author and side characters tell the reader it's fucked up and unhealthy with all that shadowy framing for DRAMA, but then suddenly romanticising it after 5 volumes at the end with cherry blossoms and uwu faces. It's having your cake and eating it too. Either own the fucked up result ala Nii-chan, or have the character grow and escape.

Maybe 2 more chapters then, cause honestly I don't see where else this series can go from here. Ikurou's relapsed twice now and decided to leave behind all other commitments or relationships he had. There's nowhere left for the story to go unless he finally grows a spine and decides to leave Norihiko. And modern-day BL authors just refuse to write a manga where the couple don't end up together.

I think your thinking about this too much in terms of plot and not the narrative structure? Also, your skipping over some important stuff. It's not that suicide with Norihiko didn't work, it's that the relationship didn't work period.

Being unable to live up to the expectations of his family, wife, and society generally, Ikurou's relationship with Norihiko was his only source of security, defiance and joy. But it became clear that even this had a corrosive influence, indeed it was tainted and doomed from the first.
Having nowhere else to turn, he decides to take his own life.
This is why choosing to protect his brother over his lover is a turning point for his character symbolically, at least it was until the author decided to shit all over it.

And it is precisely because Ikurou IS going back to the past, that any character growth is rendered moot.
It's also hard to sell this as an act of agency, as something Ikurou CHOOSES for himself because whatever affection he does harbour toward Norihiko is merely the result of sadistic operant conditioning since childhood.
There's just no way to make this story work with this couple in this way as a happy ending.

I've been turning this sentence over and over in my head because I have no idea what you mean by "broader context"? The scene is pretty much what it says on the page? And it IS objectively gleeful, there's almost no other interpretation of that scene. The exalted expression, radiant light background, the petals blowing in the background. It's as cliche as anything on a romance novel cover.

For me this unnatural idyllic tone leaves a bigger punch than if it tried to be 'objective' and presented it as dark. Even Norihiko expected that Ikurou would reject him and was ready to kill him for his betrial, but seeing Ikurou so honestly happy to see him made him change his mind.
After all this time and coming full circle, Ikurou still wants to be with Norihiko and it's no longer because it's his only source of security, defiance and joy (he has his life and allies now), this time he consciously chooses to, symbolically running back into the shadow.
He may be fucked up by his upbringing but it is his (albeit tragic) agency.

I don't think this interpretation of works, for the simple reason that it wasn't a passive failure to act on Ikurou's part. The choice to protect his brother was, and is objectively presented as an ACTIVE choice he makes (pic). It's one of the clearest instances of character agency in the entire series.

In the end, I'm just left asking: What indeed was the point of all this other than masturbation material?

That's a fair point.

The most annoying part is that Ikurou won't suffer, in fact, he'll probably go on to live happily ever after now knowing what a hack Delico is.

You don't need a coffee-shop romance to be good, but there is just no compelling reason to care about any of these characters when the story is so bolted to genre convention that character actions and decisions don't matter at all for the end result.

Personally, nothing is more disappointing than an author trying to force two characters together and the story just can't support it. Recent examples of this would be How to Kill a Heart or Caste Heaven. Good for a fap, but nothing else.

For me he gained people he kinda cares about (esp. Sachiko), and ways of life that kinda work, but he still decided that Norihiko, his cage, is of more value. It summarizes his whole life where he can have freedom, but longs for the titular cage at all costs. It goes beyong Norihiko's grooming too, he started envying Ranzou's mistreatment way before Norihiko did anything notable to him. He doesn't move past that for sure, but he'll most likely achieve his goal of being caged and owned.

If I didn't want that I'd read actual literature that tries to handle realistic relationships, the appeal of mainstream BL is that you know who will end up in what and with whom, and the real treasure is the plot and moe you find along the way.

This is just wrong. The distinguishing feature of a romance is that it is the only genre where character development IS the plot, since it by definition it necessitates two or more characters deciding to form a relationship. For any romance story to be successful, the character actions must be subject to tangible consequences and internal motivations have to be justified on some level.

Dunno, looking at the chart it's not like it has a lot of masterpieces. It seems people just put there the most famous BL VN lol. I liked it better than NTY and TNC, but I find these two just boring in general. It's a nice short game, but due to the theme I'm not sure if it has mass appeal (Then again, half of the stuff there has incest too, so it's problably fine) You could probably put it over DMMD Re:Connect since it's just DMMD's fandisk.
I wonder why I never heard of it before and how it got translated in the first place.

Yeah, I only play them for the gore bits, at least it's easy to skip the boring parts; haven't figured out how to do that in Omerta yet.

Girl on a Shore is one volume and made by Inio Asano, who is worshipped by every male manga reader in the English community. Kazeki is too long for any publishers to want to risk releasing it and IMO as someone who followed the scans a decade ago interest in the series (and shojo in general) has dwindled.

I really think it's the length rather than some fear of cancellation. Most of the companies who could license it have nothing to fear from a twitter mob of teens who are too broke to buy their fancy hardcover editions anyway. Even if the first volume sold well enough, sales of a manga usually decrease by at least half for the second volume and diminish further as the series goes on, with a very slight uptick near the end. This disincentivizes licensing very long series. Even ignoring the length, KazeKi would be a prestige series licensed for its historical relevance rather than for sales, and it would probably printed in a more limited run as a collector's item rather than for mass consumption. That + the length means very few sales. Not worth printing. It's not going to happen. At best, a service like Manga Planet/futekiya might pick it up, but because declining viewership over a long series is a problem even for digital services, even that is unlikely.
If it DOES happen, you'll know it's coming because they'll license several of her other things first as a tester and/or start hyping her in various anime news outlets, and even with that, good luck getting past the first few volumes.

Oh that was literally for homophobic reasons though, the chinese fans of the MDZS drama actor got offended that people were writing fics about their idol doing gay stuff (with the most widely attacked being a chinese rpf fic with crossdressing) and started mass reporting ao3 to chinese police. Obviously it made its way up until the whole site got banned for immorality. In retaliation the gay-side fans boycotted the actor for months which spurred even more drama because it wasn't the actor himself that snitched. Is that really necessary? Anyone with basic interest in BL will find it anway, the anime for it is in the chart as a rare example of good BL anime and there's tons of text written about it in the academic section. Adding the manga in as well feels redundant when we have so many less obvious manga to put in there.
