Lotor wasn't introduced until season 3.
Lotor killed his father in season 5, then then there was a power vacuum fought between lotors, and Honerva/Haggar (his mother).
Lotor was killed at the end of Season 6, and his mother then became the big bad for the rest of the series. The motivations for all 3 were different, but you could generally replace any one of the 3 with "space hitler" and nothing would really change.
