He didn't know he was destined to die at the start of his journey, but when he found out, he accepted his fate. Noctis had the choice to be selfish and live, something he clearly wanted to keep on doing, or go through with his Ascension.
Noctis chose to die. He went to Insomnia, absolutely full of conviction, knowing that once he got to the throne room after defeating Ardyn that he would die. That is a choice he made. It's not like he sat on the throne without realizing what would happen.
Furthermore, he died because the scourge got bad enough after a few weeks because Luna died? Who killed Luna? I can't seem to remember. Oh, right, it was Ardyn! Ardyn manipulated events to wipe out the Nox Fleuret and Lucis Caelum bloodlines and he succeeded.
Sure, Ardyn may have been kind and benevolent at the start of his journey. I don't think anyone's arguing that. The difference between Noctis and Ardyn is that Noctis didn't make what could be viewed as a selfish decision to keep living. Ardyn got pissed because the Crystal didn't want him to be king and chose his brother instead. Don't get me wrong, it was unfair to send Ardyn on a journey, which he more or less succeeded in, only to deny him what was apparently his promised reward. More than that, the game NEVER confirmed he was a "kind and benevolent ruler." He was never a king, and that's why he's so angry and upset; he was betrayed by the Crystal, and the consequences of absorbing daemons from other people meant gaining eternal life.
