While we can go around and around on the "what is BL" topic, I do think stuff in published in specific BL magazines should have at least some sort of profession of love or attraction or romance. You don't pick up a BL magazine for close friendship between boys. You don't always need dicks, like some editors seem to think, but you need something.

Given the story, I think it would've struggled in a shounen/seinen magazine just because the two MC's are dudes. Shounen readers would label it as BL, but BL readers would feel it isn't BL enough

Yes those *should* be the only qualifications but the genres stricts itself further by rarely allowing long running series, plot-driven stories or anything that falls out of the typical BL romance formula. Sure there are exceptions, but you can't deny that there's a mold.

If more of the english translation comes out to reveal that they do have feelings for each other, then it’s fine, it’s still BL. But if it’s just two dudes who lived together and learned how to become better, that’s just a regular SoL story.

The only reason why there’s not a lot of long-running plot-driven BL is because there isn’t a lot of demand for it. But when authors have works that are popular, with universes they want to expand on, they’re allowed to do so. As far as I can tell, that just means BL is working on the same business practices as any other genre in the industry.

Don’t be an idiot. All kinds of manga can have LGBT issues as topics, that’s how we got shit like Shimanami Tasogare and Ao no Flag. But for BL to be BL, the dudes need to at least feel attraction to each other.

Eh, it's high time it was. It's already 50 years since the genre's inception.

At least fujos would actually be made aware of a bit more realistic representation since they can't be fathomed to read shit that isn't tagged BL. Shimanami Tasogare was at least tagged as Shounen Ai/Shoujo Ai by non-JP so that got to some of them's radar.

As long as said LGBT issues involve men who are into other men I don't think theres an issue. Ultimately BL is still mostly a romance genre though, so its a tough sell if you don't have any love interest at all.

I mean it does, it's about a gay son coming out to his dad and finding out he's also gay, but they don't kiss of fuck. It could've been published on a seinen mag but it got published on a BL one. I don't hate it, actually.

Sarazanmai being published on a BL mag was an absolutely genius marketing strategy, actually. It was a way of both advertising the show to fujoshis while also confirming that there were romantic feeling between the cop characters while not necessarely showing anything intimate.

I think LGBT Manga wherein no romance, just an exploration of LGBT, doesn’t have a niche magazine like BL or Yuri, hence why they get published in those magazines instead because it’s just the next closest thing.

I’m pretty sure all of this is just related to marketing and what would get a series the most visibiliity. Seems to me that the One Room Angel got published in a BL magazine because Harada’s just connected there. It makes sense even if it’s non-BL, because it’s the place where she’s known, and even if it’s not BL, her fans will pick it up under the assumption that it is.

It’s the same with how Kaito got Ao no Flag into Jump+, he’s had experience and connections there. It’s not about defying genres or bullshit like that, it’s just publishing your work in areas you’re already working in.

Not the anon you’re talking to but I get them because the point of BL is reading about dudes at least having a romance with each other. Yes, there’s works where dudes don’t end up together or the romance isn’t the whole point, but in general, BL is about dudes having feelings for each other, and wholeheartedly embracing non-BL in BL publications kinda takes away the space for works that are explicitly BL. The only reason why I think non-BL works are even in BL magazines are more on >>2724781 where it’s about connections and exposure. I just noticed that most non-BL in BL magazines tend to be veterans trying something new, and so they get published in the same place they usually publish their other works. You don’t see newbies publish non-BL stuff in BL mags unless it’s got some kind of backing to it.

So I read the Fire In His Fingertips hetero release from Ghost Ship (Seven Seas) and they actually went for full porn. Souma has uncensored dick and everything compared to the Coolmic release (Coolmic has his dick whited out).

If this josei release is any indication then their might actually be a chance for them to pick up the more porn type BL (since they don't seem to be scared of big dick). Anyone know if WWWave Corporation or Seiunsha have any worthwhile releases we should consider suggesting? Only one I'm really aware of is The Titan's Bride.

I might consider the devil king story, sounds like it has game/reincarnation elements which might sell in the current market (due to the isekai boom). Otherwise I'll probably stick with the regulars, maybe an occasional submission for Titan's Bride but the others are more important currently.
