Start with Khan Academy. First identify where you need to begin (most people can count, and add/subtract, but an embarrassing chunk of the general populace can't do fractions). The natural order of progression should look something like this: arithmetic, prealgebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2 (oddly the same thing as what's called college algebra), trigonometry, calculus, discrete math (I recommend A Transition to Advanced Mathematics by Douglas Smith; in fact you can start here anytime you look,it just isn't typically encountered until after calculus), linear algebra, abstract algebra, analysis

If you really are stuck on time then just get texts 3 and 5 and 6, then do 7 through 17 and text 19, that's 15 books instead of 20, and if you want to cut it down even more then just skip complex analysis by Taylor and replace it with complex made simple by ullrich, you'll then have 14 textbooks to buy and work through, you should finish with everything in 10 years because it's exponential, as in your proof writing skill increases as you complete each text, and if you're stuck on even more time then just do half the problems in each chapter.

I don't know what your level of familiarity with Mathematics is nor what your goal with it is, so I'll just give you some advice to get you started.

You don't have to start at the very beginning (not talking about the list, I just mean in general). Even if your abilities are lacking at the very fundamental level, you should be able to remedy it through your study of Elementary Mathematics-Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry (mostly within Algebra and Geometry). Just keep in mind any concepts that you don't understand and try to make sense of them in your own unique manner. That goes for all concepts in Mathematics. I don't mean that you should reinvent the wheel, I just mean that you should have some imagination with how concepts can be looked at differently.

The basics you should go through are: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. Geometry doesn't require it's own treatment, seeing as how it's usually covered within Algebra or Trigonometry to the degree which allows for application.

>What books to read
There are no absolute "best books" to read. There are certainly books which are written better than others, and there are certainly books which others seem to advocate for, but there is no best book for you. All of those meme recommendations aren't exactly useful for you at this stage. They aren't meme books because they aren't useful, they are meme books because they won't be of much use to you-either because the level of familiarity with Mathematics expected of you is to high, or because certain terms and notation is antiquated and will confuse you. Some recommendations are certainly given with the best intentions, and should definitely be read at some point-either for reference, different perspective, or simply for leisure; but at this point, your main concern is simply gaining a general understanding of Mathematics.

In all honesty, your study routine is something that you'll have to develop and fine-tune for yourself. It's not as easy as using someone else's; you have to make it with yourself and your current abilities in mind. You can certainly use other's routines for reference, but it's something you'll develop over time.

Don't bother reading those books aimed at helping you learn how to learn or how to create habits-it's all fluff to be entirely honest; it just serves to complicate things. All you really need to keep in mind is to do Mathematics regularly-every day if you can. Don't overdo the amount of time you spend studying, it will only burn you out. I recommend you use the Reverse Pomodoro Method.

Regarding notes, I'd recommend that instead of writing in a notebook, that write within the margins of the books you read. That way all of your ideas are right next to the concept you were reading about. This also prevents you from copying everything verbatim. Why copy down a formula when it's already written down in the book? Do keep a notebook for when you work on problem sets, however. Also, you should write down any of the questions you may have while reading in the margins, or on a separate paper. Occasionally look through it and try and make sense of them in your own manner.

I'm 30 and doing the same basically. I've really enjoyed Hammond's Book of proof so far, it has filled in stuff other things seemed to gloss over, particularly connecting sets to everyday math by using the cartesian product to define N^2 and R^2. That last sentence would have really intimidated me prior, but Hammond's presentation makes me wonder why I didn't learn it when I was 10.

Precalculus is simply algebra 2 + trig. It's typically take by students who fail calculus pretty bad because they weren't ready, or by folks that did well on high school math but for whatever reason took time off from higher education and need a refresher before calculus. Also, if I could revise my original post I would recommend getting A Transition to Advanced Mathematics from the beginning or at latest after you've done some algebra.

I'm not OP but I found this thread because of synchronicity or perhaps because it was planted here by someone who knows how to bate me ;)

I want to learn because I honestly feel I was robbed of a good education intentionally. It started in 4th grade and continued from there with instances that kept me distracted from actual learning and development.

Sometimes it feels as if though this was done on purpose to keep me from being the best I can possibly be. Now that I have more control, or the illusion of, I really want to better myself so that I can at least gain someone understanding of things and marry the intellectual with the physical aspects of myself in a manner that would allow me to become the best version of myself.

May Millagros Macaraig burn in hell. I curse and damn her bloddline until the debt and balance is restored. May all those who wronged me get receive the punishment of Allah

i started to learn math at 24, enrolled for uni at 26 and im graduating with a math/cs double major degree at 30. if you are really starting out from nothing i recommend you do this:

do that and you'll have a very strong foundation to learn and do whatever the fuck you want with math. The goal is to get experience by doing the khan academy modules and getting good at computing and recognizing symbols. After that learning calculus and linear algebra at a first year uni level will be the "capstone" in how well you can parse and compute values. Once you do that you'll be comfortable enough with math to tackle proofs. You can do proofs way earlier but a lot of people take for granted how much their comfort with math helps them with the formal stuff.

Approach one, more academic - start with precalculus or calculus 1 depending on your knowledge. At the same time do some "intro to proofs" course.
Approach two - try "Gödel, Escher, Bach". I've heard that several people got inspired by this book to study Math or CS.
