I’m strongly considering going for a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering. I can go into my background and goals but I actually don’t think it’s that important here. My question is broader than just my career goals. I would like to know:

Would a Systems Engineering Ph.D.
a) be respected (at least somewhat) overall by the Tech industries, OR
b) indicate that I’m not sure what I’m doing and gullible for a sort of fake degree

Also - I read your sticky. Did you actually read /adv/? You know that I’m not going to get advice on /adv/ so I’m posting this on the board that can actually answer me.

I’m LITERALLY only asking if industry would consider the degree respectable. That’s a completely normal, obvious thing to consider when shelling out tens of thousands of dollars and years of your time. It is not indicative of any mental illness, psychopathy, or “strategy”. It’s an honest question.

Systems is definitely an in-demand field for defense and aerospace, but it's closer to project management than actual engineering. Unless you want to do academic research on project management I can't see a PhD in systems being particularly useful to your career. Plenty of people enter the field having done their undergrad in another discipline. Fair warning, though, once you have a job in systems, it'll be hard to get out of it. I know really competent engineers that only get interviews for systems positions due to their backgrounds.

Sure thing. No one's gonna look down on you for getting a PhD in a technical field, but it's a lot of time to dedicate to something really narrow. Most engineering PhDs I've seen in industry are subject matter experts on a very specific topic, which means they're getting their degrees in a subfield of aero, mech, or electrical most of the time. The systems PhDs I have seen are usually older guys in charge of major programs at the big contractors or NASA who picked up the degree while they worked. If that's something that interests you, getting industry experience beforehand is probably a better way to go. Jumping straight into a systems PhD with no background in the actual operations of a complex project wouldn't make you a particularly strong candidate for those kinds of roles.

How os it different than when anyone else asks if its worth doing a math phd?(it isnt) i asked that years ago and opted for a masters, have a family now,xant imagine how fucked up my life would be with a PhD in math.

Anyway OP. I've met exactly one PhD SE in my entire career in the DoD. Most SEs hold masters in the field and have a lot of supporting experience. The single PhD I met was a 'professor' at DAU and taught DoD engineers the basics of SE.

I'm not even sure what a PhD in SE would specialize in other than organization methods and project management techniques.

SE is essentially engineering management. It's very important for major engineering projects of all shades and a PhD in mechanical engineering doesn't really cover the field well. When you're working on these massive projects with literally 100s of different specialized engineers, you need systems engineer to put everything together and make sure requirements and order are being kept.

as a current CS phd student getting ready for my proposal and with enough academic contacts through research and internships to have a sense of the atmosphere, i think i can weigh in. for reference, my background is in Math & CS for undergrad, and i have an MS in Math.

a) i have no idea what Systems Engineering means, nor what specific skills/qualities a Systems Eng PhD would have, and i am confident that my colleagues would all agree with me. you would be respected about as much as a Mech Eng or EE PhD or Civ Eng PhD i would reckon, without more info (which is to say, not much in the "Tech" world).
b) based on the fact that i don't know what "systems engineering" is and that it sounds incredibly vague, i would say that it sounds like a "fake" degree *on its face*. that doesn't mean it's not real, but you certainly don't sound like someone with an OR, Math, CS, EE, etc PhD, and it is off-putting.

What the hell? It's like one of the most common openings at basically any large engineering organization. Almost every single semi-advanced engineering project has a PE and SE on it. It's incredibly common.

Don’t do that. Especially if you are going into defense or government work. Get a masters and go do industry work for a few years to get your foot in the door/make connections then go get the PhD once you have a solid place to land afterwards. Gunning straight for a PhD in any kind of engineering is a sure fire way to price yourself out of the market and end up languishing in academia.
