Make the handle as: 1. Emits a discharge that creates an extremely cold straight path from the center of the other end, 2. Heat the path in item #1. By extremely cold I mean absolutely no heat.

The crystal can be used to focus light rays at different points of the blade. At the top, there should be a mirror made from particles trapped by several rays. Particles should travel between the handle and the mirror guided by rays of light.
Inside the blade, we need a stream of particles for transferring force to the handle and deflecting material projectiles, and a stream acting like a mirror to reflect energy projectiles.
It would be nice if some of the mirrors could be used to make some of the more energy demanding light rays reusable.

if you watch the movies you will see other types of physics and technology that arent possible irl either like artificial gravity for example. a light saber is possible if you factor in what else is "possible" in their time and use your imagination. it is a work of fiction after all, just like artificial gravity.
