School and uni is not about ingraining information in you, it's about assuring you can understand it once so you can learn it later when you need it again

Historically universities weren't a big business, they weren't marketed as one, most people didn't go to university, school level education was considered more than enough.

Yup. These days, a university degree does not have the same value as it did back then, mainly because universities are oversaturated with eager students, and the universities are more than happy to take their money.
