Most of the foreigners are coping, at least 90% of them pursue a PhD purely because they think they can abuse visa loopholes and come out the other with a 80k job. Then they don't even get that of course, because most of the projects they choose are easy, unambitious drone work.

It’s not this simple. I graduated with a BSc in mathematics and had all the intention to become a PhD but I didn’t. Want to know why? Because the PhD career path is horrible.

Straight out of undergrad you can become a banker or a financial analyst, careers that start you at 6 figures straight out of undergrad. A PhD on the other hand will pay you just enough to live and will suck at least 4 years of your life. After 4 years my earning potential in finance is above 300k.

On the other hand a poo in the loo does not have the option of finance. In their country banks are nepotistic and corrupt and will only hire non-rich indians for menial tasks like accounting and pay them like shit. To them just escaping that hell hole is an achievement and thus you get a bunch of them applying to foreign universities.

If you want to get your own people back in academia then:

1) All PhD students get a 200k/year stipend
2) Post-Docs at 300k
3) Adjunct professors at 500k
4) Tenured professor at 1 M + 500k bonus.

That pay roughly matches banking and therefore would become attractive.

If you ever applied to a foreign PhD you know they're ALWAYS going to choose an equally-qualified local candidate over you. Picking a foreign candidate implies additional costs, more bureaucracy/paperwork and potentially more headaches later on. If so many foreigners at being chosen that really means there are no Americans with that much expertise

The only way to do this would be to bloxk of visas. The only regulation tool we have is the number of visas we issue. And it certainly is possible to have those salaries. Instead our best talent is drawn to Wallstreet as you said.

So you have no statistics to show me? You are talking about software tech companies, not even companies that make hardware. You are also ignoring defence companies, chemical companies, pharma companies etc. which are all high tech sectors that employs far more people than silicon valley does. Finally, when talking about silicon valley itself I recall several articles over the last few decades talking about how it's a problem that these companies are >90% white males in engineering positions including one that was 99% white males (I think it was Intel or IBM at some point, someone can correct me on this). This is the talent pool that built these companies, the racial profile looks completely different today because of official AA policies as well as unofficial discrimination, but those companies are NEW and they won't last. Most of the promising new startups are again by local Americans.

I'm not denying there are talented foreigners, but they are a small part of the talent pool, you are biased because they tend to be clustered in certain companies and so you see that half your department is foreign and assume that it's like that everywhere in America, which it is not.

you are lying and making things up. i know with good confidence that Biology graduate programs are fully funded, they will pay your tuition, fees, cost of your class materials and also offer a stipend under the agreement that you will work in a lab and/or teach undergrads or help out as a TA. You do not have to take out debt to get a graduate degree for natural sciences or for mathematics. I cannot speak for other """""""STEM""""""""" degrees. That's not true, I can name three PIs off the top of my head that have projects where they pay students zero stipends. And it's MORE, not less, common at top universities because rich third worlders are willing to pay for brand prestige to get their kids into less competative positions.

Meanwhile some postions based on merit have a fuckton of support. I made more money from stipends than some of my friends in industry. I literally shared a lab with a woman from China get paid 0 for her PhD.

To add to my other post the Chinese students don't speak English well enough to TA. Most foreigners don't need the money, but there are also some extremely retarded thirdie families that get into debt to support the living costs of their son.
