If you build a house from ground up then passive solar considerations are way cheaper, more efficient and more durable. If you have low-energy consumption, solar may also be a bad investment. If you have a pool to heat on the other hand, it might be a good idea. Obviously, there are loooads of considerations with solar or with any other renewable power source.
