Most predators only act so far as to frighten off a competitor because the risk of being even slightly injured is too great, it means they can't hunt so they'll starve. The only exception is if it's already starving, which means it has nothing to lose. Even then, it might try for easier prey.
That's one of the reason polar bears are so dangerous. Because of their environment, they will never pass up the chance for another meal. Most bears will ignore you if they aren't hungry, but polar bears are always hungry.
