How can I solve this problem?
Is there any specific knowledge (other than basic linear algebra and Gaussian method) necessary in order to solve this system?

for n>= 2, xn = an-x1

a1 = (2-n)x1+sum(an)
x1 = (sum(an)-a1)/(n-2)
xn = an-(sum(an)-a1)/(n-2)

well, if that really is the problem, the first thing i'd do is use two rows (excluding the first) to solve for x1. then i'd use that information to solve for all the other rows (excluding the first). actually, you don't even need the first row since you have already solved for all the xs by the time you get around to it

for k >= 2, x_k = a_k-x1

sum from 2 to n of (a_k) - (n-2)x1 = a1
x1 = (sum from 2 to n of (a_k)-a1)/(n-2)
x_k = a_k-(sum from 2 to n of (a_j)-a1)/(n-2)

Just make a matrix of it and solve with matlab:
x=inv(M)*a

Sometimes there is no exact solution so you can approximate

x=pinv(M)*a
