i havent posted here in a couple of years so this meme may be outdated, but back in the day there was the saying of math degree equals 300k$ a year.

what in the fuck can you do as a certified mathematician with that. the only field that is even somewhat applicable is finance in which nowadays a 1 hour course on technical analysis and time series decomposition is enough to turn any smart kid into a savvy investor. also with all the shit and the manipulation happening in all the markets muh calculus methods are downright useless. theres also computer science but code monkeying is beneath a true wizard.

even if the latter ignores that things that aren't *immediately* useful can be insanely useful down the line, ie. see measure theory and functional analysis.
If you're doing nothing but pure math, then you can expect salaries to be pretty low. If you're doing pure math that touches a lot of applied problems, like probability theory or combinatorics, you can expect to make more than a decent amount of money.

these are two entire things seperately. Computer scientists usually on the part of mathematics that is pure but shows up in applied problems to doing entirely applied problems. Codemonkeying is something software engineers do, but computer scientists typically don't as they themselves range anywhere from being mathematicians to being engineers to being physicists. It's harder to get a grasp on them because there are no clean divides in their culture in the same way there are in other fields, which is indicative of their nature as one of the youngest STEM fields and what makes them distinct from being *just* another engineering field.
Unironically, CS houses a lot of pure math boys who like money. It's hard to argue that this paper, one of many in a subfield of the complexity of algebraic problems, is anything *but* true wizard pure math, and the efforts have largely been lead by 2 computer scientists who got a decent amount of algebraists and geometers interested:

TL;DR you can make money in math, but you have to balance out pure vs applied interests, and CS is chock full of math autism if you wish to seek it out.

Hi OP! I too remember these memes. Math is supposed to teach you a way of thinking and learning that can be universally applied to many subjects. Simply put, if you have enough mental aptitude, are organized and determined, then you should be able to take up any new subject/skill (this doesn't mean you can do this ad infinitum, there are limits, as you will most likely not be as proficient in other areas as your main skill, Math).

Knowing this, how industrious and creative are you? Your answer will have an immense influence on whether or not you can achieve the coveted title of "Ph.D in math, any job i want, $300k starting".
